Okay, sorry. I was on my phone before. It's very, very difficult teaching a class from my phone. So I was trying to get my laptop to work. How are you doing, Kevin? How's your weekend been? Yeah, nice. Yeah, good. Glad to hear it. Have you got anything planned for? Do your family celebrate Christmas? Well, we celebrate New Year, New Year, nice. Very good. Will that all to look forward to in the coming weeks? Let's get cracking. So we had a look at some verbal reasoning last time, and we're just going to make a habit actually of testing some of the words that came up in previous classes. Because as I stressed then, and will no doubt continue to Wang on about learning new words, really the most important thing when it comes to verbal reasoning, there is nothing more important then just swatting up on as much vocap as possible. So let's dive in. I'm going to give you the words in sentences first, see if you can deduce the meaning. So I ordered some haddock. The chips chips shop was haddock. It's like I kind of fish that like. Normally like. Comes with like. Fish and chiyeah in the uk absolutely very kind of very unfishy tasting fish, very soft tasting, similar to cod, which is the other classic fish and chips fish Yeah and often served battered in England. Yeah, good. I'm teaching my nephew. To swim at the moment. He still needs ts arbands. Did we do that? It's like like a thing you like wear on your like arms to. To like low. Yeah, absolutely. Those inflatable things that you wear on your arms when you're learning to swim very, very good. I've got a cold at the moment. And so I'm feeling a bit flemy. This is very colloquial English, but people would say this, and flelegh or flemy is the kind of the adjective what is plan? I see. To this needing to blow my nose. Oh was like. Like the thing in your life. Like it's used to like. Block the term. Yeah, absolutely. Very, very good. The you know snot that that gooey stuff in your throat, in your nose, catch dust, catch bacteria, catch viruses. Yes, absolutely. Well, it's our kind ounded. I don't know what to call it, but it's a kind of filtration system of sorts, I suppose, that stops us from inhaling and digesting all sorts of bad stuff. Excellent. What would it mean if I said John sat on the park bench and muse on unlike the meaning of life? Also like to think. To think deeply, to think deeply about something, absolutely, to think about something that length deeply, to ponder, to brood. Absolutely right. Very, very good. What would it mean if I said the artist. Lay awake in bed ds waiting Oh, use. Like an idea of like. Like an idea to like. Like what's a draw? Whatever. Sorry, say that again, Kevin. I missed that. It's like like an idea of like. What to draw and what to do? Yeah, exactly. Yeah is this idea of a kind of a spiritual entity of sorts that communicates inspiration to artists. You know if we get a picture of, I'm sure there are paintings of muses visiting artists. If we go to Google, okay, we've got the band muse muse artist. Let's see. Okay, Yeah. So this one, with this one here, you can kind of see it was this idea that, you know, you've got this guy painting there and so many adverts for everything. No, I don't want to shop now. What the hell? Okay, no. Yeah so you've got the artist there painting here. And this is a sort is a kind of ghost. It's a spirit. And that spirit is is going draw a painting the field you know in the evening and I make sure that there are some sunflowers etc.. So Yeah, that's a muse. What would it mean if I said I was goaded? Been buying some new shoes after my girlfriend. Said that I looked like a tramp. It's like to be it's like to be persuaded by like. Yep, you've got it. I just don't know how to say it yet. So you persuade someone to do something you know through negative means. And it can be really broad. Like there are lots of different ways to goat someone into doing something. You can insult them, you can threaten them, you can mock them. Yeah, there are loads of loads of different ways. It's actually, it might be worth us thinking about what the original meaning of to godes was because it's quite interesting goliterally. This is not the way that it's often used, but it literally meant to kind of poke an animal with a stick, with a pointy stick. You know if you wanted to get your cow to like move to another bit of the field, you would prod them with a with a kind of like a sort of spear type thing to goads and animal, we look at this. Yeah you can see here they're in this old drawing. You've got these cows, and so there's a guy poking poking the cows with a Spike. So that's the image that we're working with here. That's literally what to gomeans is like, do it, you know? So that you know, when we say I was goaded into doing something, that's the metaphor. Your, you're poked, your your ow, all right, okay, I'll do it. But that can be, as I said, achieved through any number of you know ways. So what what would it mean if I said, Or I don't know Adam and eve or eve chose. To defy God's rodent by eating from the tree of knowledge. Not following the room. Sorry. Not following the rules. Yes. Oh, no, sorry. That was a mistake. Very, very good. Excellent. To not follow the rules, to defy, to disobey. Excellent. And what would it mean if I said Stacy wants to remove. The mole she has on her forehead. It's like. A black Yeah Brown black spots. Absolutely. We all have moles. I think moles are quite nice. So I wouldn't want to a mole myself, but there are people that do. And what is the can you remember what the other meaning of mole is? I've want those a mole. In our garden. I'm seeing you. Tunnels. There, the flower bugs. Remember what the other meaning of mole is? Not big tunnel little. So the other meaning of mole, this little animal, they're quite cute. Moles. Well, some of them are cute, and some of them are absolutely like something out of a nightmare. A mole. These little guys, you know, I think they're blind. They dig tunnels. There are some crazy moles. Have you seen that mole with the with the like star or a nose? Oh, this is freakey. This is like alien stuff. That's Yeah that's his, that's. The star nomole its nose is like a. It's just deeply, deeply weird. Anyway, nature. It's a wonderful thing. And I think though, that's all of the words that we tested. Yes, it is. So let's test the words individually. Now what is hadoc? The kind of fish? Yeah. What is to define me? Did this Sobey the rules? Yeah. What does what are the two meanings of a mole? Oh, one is a black spot and one is an animal. Very good. And what are arbads? A fable thing that you're that you are absolutely very very good and what are what are what does to gomean. The. Of I'll just persuade someone by birth. Yep. Threatening them, insulting them, mocking them. Absolutely. Lots of different ways you can do it. That's Goding. What does well? What's to muse as a verb? Oh, to think deeply. To think deeply. Very, very good. And what's our muse as a noun? Like an idea like to the like artist about what like. Yeah exactly are kind of Yeah a kind of ghost or a spirit that gives an artist ideas. It's an old, it's a very dated idea. I don't I'm not sure people really believe in Muers anymore. No, some do but it's a it's an old idea. Excellent. What what's the name of an animal that a blind animal? I'm used. I'm sorry. I'm I'm all good. It's very, very good. And what's the word for persuading. Someone to go. Excellent. Oops so gonna right does that sometimes. And what what are the things, the inflatable things that you wear on your arms when you're learning to swim arm. Arm. Armband arband very, very good. Well, and what does it mean? What's another way of saying to disobey? Or in order to not defto defy. Well done. Absolutely right. Fantastic. Brilliant work. All of those words learned t perfectly. I'm trying to see if I've missed any other. Oh, I have missed one out. Can you, can you remember what Brad is? I usually eat brflakes and raisings. How do you spell? Raising? Raising none of that not right. How the hell do you spell? That's so I'm having a real dyslexic moment here. Reason is it with a Ransome or rain? Okay. Oh, is it like a kind of wheat? Yes, exactly. It is a kind of. The kind of wheat Yeah raisins for breakfast. Excellent. It is a kind of wheat. Okay? I think you've got all of those under your belt. Excellent start. Oh, one more before the enhardest one. Actually, what's the name of the gooey stuff in your nose and throats? Bm. Absolutely right. Can you spell phm? It's really hot. Sph, Yeah E L M, good. Well done, Kevin. Absolutely right. Exactly. Okay, so let's. Carry on. Why not with a little bit of verbal reasoning or shall we know I'm going to change my mind? Ds, I'm going, let's say let's do some nonverbal today. I've got a feeling we're gonna we're gonna need to do less work on non verbal, but let's give it a go anyway, and we're gonna, what should we do? Let's let's let's jump in with some hardest stuff because I think you're gonna be pretty good at this. I can I've got a I've got a talent you're being able to tell and I think you're going to be good nonverbal. So so this is from the challenge booklet. So we've skipped out loads of material that we would normally do and we're going straight to challenge. So these are not meant to be easy. Focus test one similarities. Which of the shape belongs to the group on the left circle the letter. So you're just looking at these. You're trying to identify some common theme in the examples, obviously, that they're all circles. And actually that gets us to our answer because a's and oval, bis a kind of rounded rectangle. C is a rounded triangle. E's a kind of rounded square. He's the only one which has two circles. So ld, that's the name of the game. The questions are going to be a little bit harder than that one. Have a go. Yep, I agree. Absolutely right. When we've got the circle, it's intersecting this square. We want a black circle inside. When the trianggle is intersecting, we want a White circle inside. So that is absolutely right. E two. Yep, absolutely. He's the only one with the right arrow head. Good three. Good I agree. A fantastic. M, Yeah, very nice circle inside a square. So what obted example, trying and to try and excited to triangle. Excellent. And five. I agree, very very good. E six. Yeah very, very good. It's definitely the battle option and just notice that these harder questions are often testing that ability that you just proved there Kevin of going okay, so see any you know c's got one problem in it with it because we've got stripe lines on the triangle. Ea's got a problem with it because it's a five sided shape. It's a Pentagon but which is the bigger problem? And the bigger problem is the five sided shape because there's complete you know all of them have four sides, whereas with the trianggle, some of them are black and some of them have got that crisscross pattern. So there's a little more wriggle room for for you know something that that that. Is is Yeah digresses from the patterns listed seven. Deviates seven. Yep, very, very good, fantastic. Brilliant, I agree. Fantastic nine. Yep. Yeah, nice, very very good. Absolutely he brilliance aladin. Yep, twelve. Yes, indeed, it's fantastic. I said you were gonna be good at this and I was not wrong, was I? Wmatrisses, which belongs in the missing square. Good, he I agree. And two. Yes, indeed. B well done, excellent work and. Yeah, my govery quick but absolutely right c five. Yes indeed six. Absolutely seven. Good and. Excellent. Yes, and nine. Yeah very good trying business to reflected ten. Yep. I love the way that you're working, Kevin. Really sorrow not committing to an answer until you're absolutely sure. Great twelve. Indeed, well done. And we go on analogies. Here we go. This is to this as that is to that. Misdoubt, question one. That's all right. We'll go back. Do two. Not sure about this one. I think two things are happening, aren't they? On the one hand, we've got a 90 degree rotation, but on the other hand, the crosses and the White squares are swapping. So this hit becomes a cross. This becomes a White square. So see, absolutely. Yes, indeed, I agree. And who. Yeah, nice. Very good. I think that's right. And do. Yeah bye. Be excellent. Well done. And six. Oh, God, this is both an eye test. This one. Let's make it bigger. Yeah. P, so take me through your reasoning on this one, Kevin. I would have picked a different answer, but I might be wrong. You know, I am wrong sometimes. What's your, what's your what was your thinking behind this one? No idea. No idea. Okay, fair enough. Very honest. So what I'm seeing is that with this one here, this pattern type of sort of diagonal lines running across, you can see that we've got one of those there. With this one here, we've got three of them, one, two, three, and the black pattern features here. So we kind of just want to match that up to this in that we're looking for three circles that have that vertically striped pattern. Sorry, one circle, my badthat has the vertically stripe path pattern, three circles that have the crisscross like that. And with circles that are White, is there one of those that you can see? There you go. B excellent. Oops, sorry. Oh, you go seven. Yeah, I agree. Yes, indeed we are nine. Yeah, that looks good to me. Very, very nice. On ten. Yep, I agree. Eleven. Interesting. Again, it's not the one I would have picked, but take me through. Take me through what you're reasoning is. What do you think is going on here? You tell you what I'm seeing, okay? I'm seeing a sort of 90 degrees anti clockwise rotation. So it's as if the first shape kind of spins that way and then this White circle kind of travels down the shape and goes to the end like that. And these yes, exactly. So I think he makes more sense for that reason. Twelve. Hey, good. Very, very good. Okay. Have you got have you got a few minutes? Because we started a little late. Have you got a few minutes now, Kevin, or do you need to go? What was that? Sorry, I'm fine. You're fine. Okay, let's do let's just do a few more and then we're gonna call it a day worked absolutely spectacularly today although I have no Douthat you would reflections in this case. Now notice that you're not given the mirror line, which slightly complicates these. You've got to figure out where the mirror line is yourself. Sometimes it's gonna to be vertical. Sometimes it's going to be horizontal, sometimes it's going to be diagonal. Just to complicate things, I don't think it will be yet. Let's see if you can figure this out. Yep, that looks good to me. Excellent. Yes, very nice. Well done. Good stuff. Got that one wrong, but you're absolutely right. Is correct. Three. Yes. And last question of the class four. Yes, very, very good and indeed fantastic. Okay. So we're up to question five of reflections. On the bond and the challenge, ged. But let's and making a note of that. So I do not forget brilliant. All right, Kevin, that was fantastic work. And you kind of proved to my theory that your nonverbal reasoning is very good. And so we've got a really good choice to make, which is, do we keep on sort of just congratulating you for being so brilliant at nonverbal reasoning? Or do we dig into something that might be a little bit more challenging? My instinct is that there's more work to be done on the verbal reasoning side of things just because of the amount of vocabulary that you have to learn to be good at those papers. So my suggestion would be that we we spend more time on the vr and especially on vocab building, and we dip our toes into nvr every now and then. But I don't think it's the priority. I think you're really good at that. And you're not going na get below 85, even higher percent on any given paper, which is great as a cause for celebration. But just to give you a heads up, that's my sense of how we should tailor the course going forward. All right, well, with that said, have a wonderful rest of your Sunday. I know it's pretty late over there already, but enjoy the rest of the day and I'll see you next time. Take care, Kevin. Hi.
