Hey, hi. Hi, Serena. How are you? I'm great. Thank you. How was your week? It was great. Thank you. Okay, great. I'm just trying to open up because the resources give me one moment. The power points slowly down in moment. Why is it up here tonight? Oh Yeah, Yeah. Oh Yeah. Okay, great. So today's learning objective is to develop your use of descriptive writing. And the success criteria is to know how to develop writing in a descriptive manner, to apply descriptive techniques to a prompt, and to construct a plan to apply descriptive writing knowledge to my work. So what does that mean? That means I'm going to understand how to create a story, how to write really, really good descriptive writing. We did a little bit of work on this during the week as well, so we'll build on that too. So a start a task, how can we make our sentences more descriptive? So. When you're reading, writing, what makes it interesting is you're adding different types of words and adjectives and making them more detailed and interesting to read the reader. So instead of saying there is a swimming pool, I might say there is a cool, deep pool pool where you can happily swim and play. It gives the reader more information and you know add better picture of what it looks like in their mind. Because if there is a swimming pool that could look like so many different things when you're reading a book, it's really nice when the writer gives extra details and makes it sound really, really interesting. So as I start a Serena, if you have five minutes to extend these boring sentences, these three boring sentences to make them more descriptive, like the one on the left. So there's three sentences, there are some lounges, there are slides. The weather is nice, so you have five minutes to make them more interesting. Yeah. Is okay. The is. Where what is the sun lounry? You know like when you go on holiday and beside the pool there are those beds that people lie on. Oh Yeah, that's a sun. I finished. Okay, great. Can you let me know what you said? Yeah. Hello hello, can you hear me? Hello, Serena. Yeah let me know what you wrote. There are some soft, comfortable sun loungers where you can rest and lie down on. There are some scary dangers sliin apart, where you can slide down the slippery plastic. The Sunny weather today is really nice. I feel so refreshed in this weather. Yeah, that's really good. Well done. So what do you notice about making them longer and more interesting? Like what does that make a difference? What difference does it make? It is more, I can't really hear you. It's very laggy. Okay, I think my wife fi is not good downstairs in the house. I think I might go upstairs. So just give me two, two minutes just to rejoin. Okay. Is there a difference between the sentence being shorter and longer? How can you describe that? Does it make it more interesting? How do you feel about it? It's more interesting. Yeah. Okay, and it is very it is more memorable ayeah, exactly. And it makes it feel more personal and captures your attention more. Okay, perfect. Okay. I'm going to give you an image of a holiday destination, and you have four minutes to write down answers to the following questions. How am I? Going to do that. Okay, instead of me showing you an image, instead can, what you do is can you find an image of your own on the Internet of a holiday destination? And you will have, I'm going to give you a bit longer. I'm going to give you five or six minutes to write down answers to the following questions here. Can you see the questions? What would you see? What would you do that did all these questions? And you have to answer it according to the image that's in front of you. So can you find a picture on the Internet of a holiday destination? Yeah. Have you found one? Okay. Yeah, ready. Okay, perfect. So maybe five or six minutes to answer the questions. I'm just going to get something. I'll be back, okay, but just continue with your task. Renina, I'm going to give you a few moments just to finish off. Okay, I'm done. Okay. Great. G, okay, what did you get for? What would you see? Well, can you describe the picture to me? First of all, what picture did you choose? I A you the last question as like should I tell you why I wrote for the last question? You can just give me like a simple description just to start off and then you can tell me that question just so that I know like what kind of so it's basically Maldives. Okay, Maldives I'm okay. Got it. So Yeah and it's got like palm trees and stuff. So what did you get for what would you see? When I see I said there are some salt. No, that isn't it. Okay, but Yeah, I saw some tpalm trees. I produce coconuts, palm trees in groups just on the Sandy beach next to the puure class. You see? Yeah, love it. Okay, what's the second one? What would you do? I will go and swim in the clear of Lucy and go into the sunshine just relaxing while hearing some interesting animal noises. Okay. And what sorts of food would be there? There will be delicious coconut and other fresh fish like tuna. And sometimes you can even explain like what the smell like. It smells like salty and nice, or the food is spicy and it tingles in your tongue, or it's sort of sweet or it's sour and it makes your face like scrunchthere will be therewill be delicious watery coconuts that melt down your mouth and other fresh sweet weets, fresh spicy fish and older their tongue like, you know, with be empand then chicken. What what the what the weather be like. The sky will be empty, but just with the bright, fiery sun that shines over the area. So are people might like this holiday, anybody could like this place, but especially people who enjoy scuba diving and swimming. And then how would you describe the place? You can see a peaceful, peaceful tropical escape with a turquoise infinity pool that melts into the ocean. Paloum tree sits on a lush island nearby. The calm water mirrors this clear sky and soft clouds, creating a dreamy, relaxing. Yeah, that's great. I love it. Okay, well done. You did really well. Okay, I'm going to give you the little task on the left. Can you now with these images and we choose an image. Okay, this image I'm going to give you, can you write me two paragraphs of a description of what this ski holiday would look like based off the picture, but also based off of maybe what you can think about might at the ski holiday, like what kind of food, like, for example, might be hot chocolate and warm food, maybe the vibe of the people. People are from all over the world visiting and going skiing. What clothes are they wearing? They're wrapped up warm. What's the view? Can they see mountains? Can they see trees? Can they see a lake? Is it snowing or is it just windy? That kind of thing? So can you write me two paragraphs of a description? And I really want you to try and use as many different techniques as you can. So using the adjectives, which you're really good at, and then also using, have you ever heard of a metaphor before? Yeah anor a simile. So things like things like similes and metaphors, or even remember the trick that we used in persuasive writing when I had used three adjectives to describe something, I don't know if you remember, but that also applies for descriptive writing. When the writer puts three adjectives together, it makes it more engaging for the reader. So that's a really good idea to use or even like describing the weather, maybe different characters that are there. Okay. So I'll give you a bit of time to work on that and let me know when you're finished. Wait, second can, did you say that I have to? Yeah. Like. We techniit again. Okay, so can you please write me a descriptive writing based on this image of two paragraphs? Again, thank you. What are these things called, again, a cable? Oh again. Okay. I think great. Can you read out your description to me as a tiny Cape where they call again, cable cars? As a tiny cable car suyed gently on the rope, a woman zoomed down slope on her skis, heading straight toward them. So Fike starts in the air like they were on a mission to start, fresh lies fluttering down with sparkly excitement. The sun was blazing so brightly and made every snowflake look like you was trying to escape. Escape. Oh, I meant escape amount, whatever. Even though the ground looked super bumpy and roit was actually smooth, like surprisingly smooth if you ran out your hands over, it felt soft and silky, kind of like frosting on a cake. It was weird how something actually, it's something that it was weird. It was weird to have something that, I mean, that smooth looks so rough. Look, so something that looks so rough could be gentle. I'll was supposed to say it was weird how something looked so rough. That's okay, but they looked Yeah not look about. Yeah, I think that's done. Oh Yeah. My two paragraphs is like after escape. If someone's lazing too rightly, I mean recent, it looked like it was trying to escape. Yeah, that's fine. Wow. So when I'm really impressed, I really liked the snowflakes and how you spoke about the blazing sun. It was really good. And used meforce use similto regadget with some really, really impressive. Well done. Okay, it's a really good practice. Okay. Let me open on a different PowerPoint. Now I think we can do a different one. Resources. Okay, now when you're writing as well, it's really important to find different words and vocabulary and not just saying like, Oh, it looks nice, it looks pretty, it looks really good. Like your teachcan to be like, can you use some different words? So this is an example of an image of the countryside, and there's three examples here, but I want to try your best and create a word bank for this image. So three examples are rural, fertiles and unhurry unhurried. So rural means somewhere like in the countryside where there's not really many buildings that own, means that the land can be used for farming. And unhurried means it it's been untouched and no one's really been there. So can you think of some more words for this image that you could describe and make a word bank, right? And this goes for all descriptive you know planning and writing. If your teacher gives you an image, the first thing when you're planning is try and think of many different, you know unique words that you can use to describe the image in your descriptive writing. So I'll give you a few minutes to do that. Does that make sense? Great. Wait, so discard that picture. Yeah, this picture? Yeah. Because different pictures, of course, have different things. Yeah. So two paragraphs, not paragraphs. Can you create a word bank of objectives you could use to describe the image? Yeah. Then like at of school, it's like a word that like means Green, like it's type for Green. It's like nori or like norwhere. I heard that is like see you know that word. I don't think an O R, I take a word that means queer doesn't I think I know Noris a type of seaweed, right? Maybe I think it's a japack Japanese rule as well, but Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, I don't think it's A I don't think it's an English word, but you can use you can compare it to nori seaweed if you want because it's Green. Okay. Okay, then I'll. Just use pine, maybe. Can pine be like Ted? It described as like a color? Yeah you can compare as well, like if you're doing a simile or something. I didn't do a lot, but that's all I can do. Yeah, that's fine. Okay. Can you let me know what's that? Right? Second. Oh Yeah. Okay. Natural White. Yeah then clean looking yellooks clean and then crowded and spacious at the same time. Yeah. Crowded with spacious. Oh, that's a really that's a good, that's a good contrast you can use as well. When you're writing, you can see there's a contrast between the crowded area and the spacious area too. And then, Rokey, the floor is very, the ground is very low and it is very, very bright as like, not like, not like dark, dead and like that. It's like alive and bright. It's like, it's like a color of pine. I think I'm, am thinking of Green. Wi don't want to say Green. Okay, Yeah. And other words, I would always think, I would also think of if I was there, it feels really serene, calm, tranquil, breaexciting, maybe like fresh, fresh air, warm because it's Sunny, breezy. Yeah, okay. Okay, so now we're going to read an extract from a story called Under Milk Wood. You don't really have to know too much about the story, we're just going to focus on the writing. But what we're going to do is we're gonna to read the extract and then we're gonna to spot words or phrases that show the following sensations, peace and tranquility and anxiety and menace. So there's two different categories. Peace and tranquility is about calm, about tranquil, but some things that are relaxing, whereas anxiety and menace show things that are stressful and chaotic. Yeso, we're trying to look at different words that show different types of emotions, which is really important, because sometimes writers might mix both and different types of emotions in the same piece of writing to show that there's different types of characters, there's different types of stories and the themes, but also to show chaos, you know, one person walking on the street might be really calm, where as someone else might be really chaotic. So it shows different types of emotions that might happen in real life. Okay? Let's start off with this one. I'm going to read it out and then I'm going to give you a few minutes to spot different the two different themes, the peace and tranquility and anxiety and menace. So I'm going to read it out for you. Does that make sense? Yeah, okay. To like. Work peaceful and anxiety Yeah so 11 category is peaceful and the other is anxiety. Yeah and I'm to you to spot words that that are in each category. Yeah. So the first voice, very softly, you can hear the dew falling and the hushed tonbreathing only your eyes are unclosed to see the black and folded town fast and slow asleep. And you alone can hear the invisible star fall the darkest before dawn minudew grays, star of the black dab filled sea by the areyusa, the klew and the skylark sanzibar Rihanna, the rover, the cumorant, and the star of Wales tiilt and ride listen, it is night moving in the streets the processional salt slow musical wind in Coronation Street and cockle row it is the grass growing on larragib hill dewful starful the sleep ep of birds in milkwood. So I know it's a little bit of a tough extract, it's a bit advanced, but I think that you are quite a good reader and writer, so I think you can take on this challenge even if you don't understand everything, try and figure out what sentences or phrases or was might be related to each category, peace or anxiety, and just try your best. That's the thing with English, you know sometimes things were difficult and they look confusing, but you just have to try your best and see what you can figure out. Because at the end of the day, a reader, people are gonna na be reading books and stories in different ways. Not everyone understands every single thing, but they understand generally what's going on. Okay, so I'll give you a few minutes to just read through it yourself again and try and figure out what might be in each category of words, the peace or the anxiety. I'm going to give you a few minutes so you can take your time, okay? Sir, I do write it. No, you don't need to write anything. You just need to look at the extract and figure out which words or phrases might be related to each category piece or anxiety. Oh, okay, okay. Yeah, Yeah. What is do for me? I don't think it means anything specific in this story, but I think it would probably mean like rain or something. Wet dew is like you know in the morning when well, it's kind of like foggy and like on the grass, it's a bit wet. It's like that's the deyeah. Time done. Okay, great. So what did you get? So for peace, it's harsh, asleep, invisible, starful, felt and musical. And for anxiety is black alone. The darkest are black, dark, build and doful. Okay, great. Perfect. Now this I extract. I want you to read it by yourself before the lesson ends and try and find some more words. Page category. Okay. And then okay, great. Can you tell me. So till is like a peaceful one and then. Black is dark, butterfly is peaceful, and inchoker is dark. Coffee is dark. It's a very weirdly written extract, right? But it's quite different. I think it's got quite, I don't know how to describe it. Like there's a lot of different descriptions, but I think that's to show chaos and like there's a lot of things going on, but I think you've done really, really well to try and understand it, especially since you don't know the story. But Yeah, well done. Okay, right. Just to finish off the lesson, I'm not tutoring you tomorrow or on Tuesday, so I think I'm going to see you on Wednesday. But for Wednesday, could you write me up a descriptive story based on I'm just trying to think something because we've done on a lot of holidays, so I just want to want na do something different. Can you try and write me a story about an adventure story in London? And I'm going to keep it quite open. So I want to see how creative you can be. Can you write it going to be a page and can you write it for me? Try and use all the techniques that we've spotted today. Interesting sentences, adjectives, similes, metaphors, different lengths of sentences as well. Yeah. Does that make sense? And just try and send it to me before the lesson on Wednesday. Okay, okay, perfect. Thank you, Serena. I'll see you on Wednesday. See. Bye, bye, bye.
