Emma, how are you? Good. Brilliant. Well, thank you so much for joining. Let me just let the agent know that we're all here. Okay. So well, it's very nice to meet you. I'm looking very much looking forward very much. I'm very much looking forward even to these sessions. So I thought that we could just start off with introducing each other a little bit. What I know is that you are currently in year nine and stop me at home getting anything wrong here, by the way, but you're currently a year nine and that you're rugby. And what we're here to do is kind of to work on your rfs and philosophy. But I like to add some detail to that picture. If that's okay with you. Maybe you could start off by telling me how long you've been studying rs for, what some of the things you're interested in in the subject and that kind of that kind of thing like I just started this year. Yeah and. Going to say the topics that I've learned so far that would be would be great. Yeah. We learn like the different ethics, like the divine commentary, virtual ethics, humanism, canteen ethics and utilitariism. Great. So the focus has mostly been on ethics so far. That's Yeah that's a good starting point. What it would be nice for me to know what are you hoping to get out of these sessions? You what kind of Yeah what do you want to achieve over the next week and a half or so? But just. Like learn about like what I've been doing in school, right? So it's mostly kind of revision. That's the goal for these sessions. It's going over that stuff. Well, I mean that's that's great. Let's start with with going over some of that stuff that I think that's a good place to start. So the first question I have for yma is can you access Google Docs? Yes. Okay, brilliant. I'm going to send a Google doc here, so I'm just going to call mrmrrs and I'm going to share that with you in the chat. And this is going to be where we put lots of things. It's going to be what I put resources for you. It's where you're gonna to put any work that you do for me. It's just generally going to be a place where stuff kind of goes and what we work on because a lot of these classes going to be about reading things together, you know, rs and philosophy, they're reading subjects, right? So youkind of expect that, and I'll put those in the dock as well. But it's important that you have a copy. So what I suggest is you take this here, sort, just put in the chat and you, you know, send it to yourself, fia email or otherwise store it away. Because we're going to look at this pretty much every session. If ever you forget it, it's fine. I can always send another copy, but it would be good you know to have a copy of your own to refer to between sessions. So let's start off by just quickly getting a list down of the things you've studied so far, which can then double up as a kind of syllabus for the next couple of wait. So different kinds of ethics. So what I heard here was I heard divine command theory, let's say work covered so far. Run me through the others. Divine command theory. What else have you looked at? We're ed aches gs, but your fthics. Yeah humanism. Humanism. Yeah canteen canteen ethics. Yeah and utilitariism utilitariism. Fantastic. What I'm going to start off by doing is pushing tabs on the side here. Probably you can see those to bank command virtue fthics humanism. Can't in ethics and utilitarianism. So put those here. And what we're going to try and do is start off by filling in stuff on each of these tabs. It's gonna to be useful. So we're gonna to revise this stuff and also deepen your understanding. That's really the goal of these kinds of sessions. Couple of questions to start with. One is, do you have a textbook yet using a textbook for rs? Yes, but I have the pdf version of it. Thatbe thatbe thatwould be awesome. Yeah, even better. Yes, please. Yeah. And also it might be good for you to have my email actually. Well, Yeah, here's my email. Maybe you could send it to me via email as well. So that's just my email. I don't know how how Yeah, I don't know how email works for you, but clearly, obviously it can be a bit slower. But Yeah. Okay. I'm I actually don't know how to send it. Like can I send it like after class? Yeah, that's totally fine. That's totally fine. It would be Yeah, it would just be nice for me to know the kind of syllabus you're working with so I know what you've covered and what you haven't covered yet. So that would be nice. To be at sunafter classes is totally fine in terms of written work, what kind of written work are you doing in class and for and for prep? Is it essays? Is it shorter questions? Is it passage based? What what kind of written work are you looking at at the moment? Like four questions and some annotations on text. Great. But no kind of long essays or anything like this. Yeah, no, I've done my test for my long essay, just one. Okay. And which subject was that on? I forgot like I forgot our question for it, but it's like. Something between these five topics. Yeah okay. Well, maybe you can look that up between now and the next class. That could be something worth knowing for me. Well, I think the session, it would be nice to go through some of what you already know. So what I'm going to suggest is that we go through each of the five topics and we. Have you get your notes out, have a quick look over them, and then tell me what you can remember about each of them against the way that we should we should try and do this. Should I like can I type on that? The undocument? Yeah, you can type on it. That would be great. Yeah. Well, I think what would be nice to start off with is just to ask you to talk me through each of these topics and then we can maybe do some some typing afterwards. First of all, what is divine command theory? And again, pause for a minute, have a think, and then when you're ready, have a go at summarize it for me in as much detail as possible. Like what is what is right is what God says, right? Yeah Yeah again, take a minute and have a think, have a look at your notes if you have them. And then I want a nice full explanation. So give me every kind of detail, arguments for it, arguments against it, who some of the main thinkers are. I want us to really try and get a good summary of the topic. Something is morally correct when God and commands it and it's like the deten commandments, the examples, the Ten Commandments. Yeah. I don't know the other. That's just what we learned. Yeah, is there anything else you remember about divine command theory? Y. It does focuses on religion. Tell me more about that. It suggests that because God is. Ultimately, all powerful, ful and good, the commands given by God provide the best ethical guidance for a certain decision. Yeah. Okay. Well, I think that's a really good I think that's a really good. I mean, that's a really good start. I'm going to give you something that I want you to have a quick read of, and then I want you to annotate it for me. I think this is the way that we're going to start. So look at the divine command theory tab. I'm just going to put reading in here for you. And I want you to do two things with this. First of all, I want you to annotate it and then I'm gonna to want you to summarize it for me in your own words. You're on there already yet you can see that. Okay, brilliant. I'm gonna give you a few minutes to annotate it and then I want you to summarize it for me in your own words and then I might ask you a couple of questions about it. So you have to be ready to answer those. I don't know how to antake it. So what I think we could do is, well, when you annotate them in class, how do you annotate them? We like it's on our book. It's like it's not online. Yeah but how in your book do you annotate it? Highlighters and just right on it, right beside it. Yeah, well, that's fine. You can do that here, right? Because you can highlight it. You can go like this and then highlight the text up here if you want. That's maybe not the best color, but that's fine. Or you can Yeah you can bold it. You can just go bold and you can also write comments on the site here, right? So if you go like this, you can then add a comment and say, you know this is common. So Yeah Yeah just get familiar with the platform, that's probably the main thing and then have a go annotating it for me. I'm finished. Okay. Well, the first thing that I want you to do is talk me through all of the material in your own words. So explain all of this back to me as if I don't understand any of this, and you need to explain it to me for the first time, leaving nothing important out. So the divine. Mentary is like what's God think is right is right and it's related to religion, which is like. What the God's nature is good and there are. Two horns in the oro dilemma. Yes, the youth youth of froo dilemma wesay, exactly. Okay. The first one, it says that what God commands is good because it is good in itself, independent of God's will. And. But there is a problem which suggests that there's something that's beyond the God's power to control, which is which conflicts with omnipotence. And the second horn is that. Thought is perfect, but there's no standard view of what good is. He could like change it, change deep lives ves anytime. Yeah. Great. I mean, it's an excellent summary. I have a couple of questions for you based on this. First of all, what does divine command theory suggest about the relationship between God and morality? It's like the God is creating the morality. Yeah, absolutely right. I mean, it's a really nice way of putting it. How does the story of Abraham and Isaac illustrate the principles of divine command theory? Like if if even if I doing things that you think is wrong, but God says that it's right and it's still okay, do it. Like for example, the it sets like even if it's killing a child, it is good because God said so. Yeah I think that's that's a really reasonable reading of that. What what does it mean to say that morality is objective according to divine command theory? What is objective morality in this context? It's like you have your own point of views not based on others. Well, hanven, when we say that something's objective, what do we mean by that word objective? Objective means, I think you're right, but it isn't based on other people's points of view necessarily. But I think it isn't necessarily based on your point of view either. It's just right. Something's objective. So we might somebody might say science is objective, which means that the truth that science comes up with aren't really disputable. They might be disputable by other scientists, but whether you like it or not, evolution is all the world is round routhan a flat or something of this kind. Okay, so. I want to ask which horn of the eufofroo dilemma you find more persuasive and why? The first one, the first one, because it's sad that they are like the the the sentence, it's said d that there is an like external moral standard is beyond God's part control, which means that there are some things that God cannot control. While the second horn says that God could change his mind about what is good, which means that there's like not a standard view of it and which sometimes makes things unfair. Yeah, I think that's a really interesting answer. I that point of fairness and unfairness is a really good way of thinking about it. So I now want us to have a look at another passage which continues from this one. And we're gonna to think more about the different horns of the divine command theory and of the utho dilemma and which one might be preferable. And we're also going to look at another way of trying to defend the divine command theory. So I'm just putting those in the chat there. And it's going to be the same deal as before. So I want you to annotate it and be ready to summariise this for me in full detail. And then I'll ask you some follow up questions based on the passage that sound good. Okay. Two. Okay. I think we should start to talk about this extract. So I know you haven't quite made to the end. Beyou've done very well. Why don't you have a go at summarising it for me? First of all, in your own words. Okay the. The first, I'm not sure, but suggesting that God is equal to us. But it's like he doesn't have the total power of control over everything. And. Swinburn on the second horns suggest that like some. Some truths are right, just like math or science. And although God is in charge of many things, there are still some facts that he cannot change. If and if God commands something bad like murder, murdering is good, then it will be considered as good, which means that more morality lacks independent bases. And. Also on the Robert Adams modified divine commentary, there's a third option. Meaning that God is seen as an inherent part of God's character and suggethat morality isn't random and independence. And. They preservice God's are on the potent by making God the source of morality. And their, I didn't finish that the last one, but I was going to write that killing is wrong because. We kill you from because it's a basic command of this loving God. Yeah. So I have a couple of questions for you based on this. Do you think that Robert Adam's modified divine command theory is a convincing solution to the eufofroo dilemma? I think. It's. I'm actually, I'm not sure like what the commof a loving gomeans. Yeah. Well, I think those are just what a loving God would say we should do. What a loving God would say we should do. It's like if someis it's something, it's like it. It's absolutely that you can't change it. Yes. Yes, something thin's absolutely that you can't change it. Exactly. The, I think this one is the one as quite like, realistic because if something is like it looks definitely and you say that God wants to change it, then it's just not like some people might think that. It's so obvious as why you want to change it. So I think it's good that he added this one. Okay. Well, we're just coming towards the end of this session. I wanted to ask if you had any last questions for me before we wrap up. I can I send the the the documents to your email like our whole textbook? Yes, that would be great. That would be brilliant. Brilliant. Okay, okay. Okay. Any last questions? No. Okay. All right. Well, let's leave with that. We're very good to see you and I'll speak in a couple of days. Okay, okay. Till then, bye, bye, bye.
