Today, are you happy? I'm very happy. How are you? Lian, I'm very happy to because today I not have a homework. That's always a cool cause for celebration. How wonderful that you don't have homework. I'm happy for you. Alright, well, look, today is going be a little bit of a sort of assessment day, just to gauge the level of your English, which sounds good. An assessment is a test of sorts. I mean, it won't be a test, but it's just gonna to be we're gonna to start off on the E L E L sorry, rather B1 and I've got less essing one. Which is. Here. We're just going to make our way through this PowerPoint determining how much you know about pronouns. So here we go. Okay, how can we avoid repetition? And by the way, Leaan, any words come up that you're not aware of, like assessments example, we're just going to make sure to define them in the top left. Assessment is a test. A way of assessing testing for one's level or ability particular subject. Learning as much a new vocabulary as possible. Really important part, as I'm sure you're aware, learning any new language. So Yeah how can we avoid repetition? Repetition is when something that is said or written is used over and over again. For example, Gary ate supper when Gary got home. Gary enjoyed the food. It's not a very elegant sentence. It makes sense, but it's it's clunky. It's it's boring to listen to the endless Gries. So at first, after its first use, instead of repeating Gary, we could replace further uses with pronouns to avoid repetitions, such as, Gary ate his supper when he got home, he enjoyed the food. Much easier to listen to that sentence and more pleasant to read, less repetitive and cyclical. So where are the pronouns here? Well, he. As a pronoun, his is a possessive pronoun belonging to him. So to define pronouns, if you weren't aware of them already, pronouns are, I mean. You. You hear him? She her. We us, you you. And they then so all I've done there is. We've got the subjects on the left hand side and the objects on the right. Be familiar with all of those words, lyan. So let's just Yeah get those there and we may call upon those later on. So pronouns, how many different pronouns can you think of? Don't forget to include personal, possessive, relative and reflexive pronouns. So these are all personal pronouns. Yeah, I should. So Yeah, how many pronouns can you identify here and which do you think of which? Starting off with yourself, is that a pronoun? And if so, is it personal, possessive, relative or reflexive pronouns do you think? No. Perhaps these are terms that you're unfamiliar with. So the personal pronouns I've got there, I meet you and I'm just gonna to add this to be clear, we've got subject on the left, objects on the right. Subjects. Objects now what what do I mean leaam by subject and objects, you come across that terminology before. Subject object is学科。Subject is cool. Yeah I'm afraid I my Chinese I don't speak any Chinese, so you're going to have to explain in English. But Yeah, what's your understanding of subjects? If. We have a sentence like I gazed the present to him. We identify all of the parts of this sentence. Obviously, I is our subjects. And what's our obhere? Object jects is him. Good? Absolutely. Object is him. And the verb is, and the presence is also an object. So we have two objects in the sentence. Him is our obpronoun, present is our obnoun, and I is our subpronoun. So these are, these are all personal pronouns. I, U, he, she, we, U, day for subject, me, you, him, her, us, you. Then for object. Now, reflexive pronouns. With being myself. Yourself. Insult her. Listen. Ourselves. Yourselves. Themselves or themselves both both are correct, really. So. Yes, what maybe themselves is the more formal one, but what I'm going to include those. So can you think of a sentence, Liam, which would use a reflexive pronoun? I'll give you one in as an example. So it would be something like. After swimming in the freezing cold sea, I warmed myself up. By drinking some hot tea, having a warm shower, having a shower. So you can see I warmed myself up. Reflexive. Because, you know, you could warm, you know, I warmed the tea up. I warmed the fish up. I warmed my friend up. You know, you could be warming other things up, but in this case, you need to warm myself. So reflexive requires somebody doing something to themselves. That's sort of what reflexive means. So used. When doing something. To. Yourself for oncell. So do you want to see if you can think of an example of a reflective pronoun use usage? Number word example might be. The cats licked himself. Again. The cat is doing it to himself or itself, as should include. Can you think of another example, Liam, of a reflexive pronoun used correctly in a sentence? When something or somebody is doing it to our to itself. The dog is playing in the toy. Okay, so the dog is playing with the toy. Now that's at the moment not got a reflexive pronoun. It's a correct sentence. But in order to make it reflexive, you would want to make sure that the dog is doing something to itself. So the dog is playing with itself. That makes sense, or himself or herself, depending on the gender. The dog, again, see if you can think of another use with reflexive. She was talking to herself cell. Meaning she was talking, she wasn't talking to anyone else. She was like, okay, Helen, you've got to remember to wash the dishes today and then you're going to try to leave early, but you've got to get the train on top. You know how people can talk to themselves. But again, this is reflexes because she's doing it to herself. So again, think of these are the examples. You have to be doing something to yourself. They were. Coking for themselves. Coking for the for themselves. Oh Yeah, they weren't cooking for anyone else. They were cooking for themselves. So this is when you use reflexias when you're doing something two or for yourself. So the action comes kind of almost in on itself. So those are reflexive pronouns. Again, just to explain, we're going to come more familiar with each of these possessive pronouns. Any idea what a possessive pronoun is? So what it means. So it's used to describe something belonging. To somewhat. So in other words, this is my. Your. Is. Her. Hour. You. And there. These are all of the possessive pronouns, so my dog likes to. People's facaces. So my there are possessive alright, now can you think of any other examples of sentences with a possessive pronoun? Say her. Or is or our you think of any examples. Yeah. This bird likes to eat food. Absolutely. His bird likes to eat food. Fantastic sentence. Well done. Meal. Absolutely. And Yeah, you know. Their homework. Is very difficult. Again, the homework that belongs to them. So possess it is all about whose possession it is, who it belongs to. So there we go, all of our personal pronouns for subject subjects. I mean, you keep him, she, her, it, it, we, us, you, you, they then reflective myself, yourself, himself, itself, herself, ourselves, yourselves, their, themselves, possessive, my, your, his, her, it's our, your, there. And finally, we have relative pronouns. Which other? Ones that are least like the others, I would say. So relative pronouns, pronouns which describe the relationship between two things to go between. Two people or things. So what are the relative pronouns who? That's. Who's. Forget that I going. Which who's? Yeah so hopefully you recognize these words, some of these words, who's and whom are the less well? Whom is whom is the least common. In fact, I wouldn't I wouldn't worry too much about whom for now. But who can you use who in a sentence? Can you think of a sentence for chooses who correctly. What is that, yewho? Is that absolutely. And that, Interestingly, is would that count as a pronoun, as a relative pronoun? I suppose maybe it was, but really, the pronouns here describing the relationship between some two things, it's more like Jennifer is a student who always does her homework. So can you see though that who there is describing the relationship between, in this case, an idea of someone always doing their homework and the person, Jennifer? So that's more what we're we're thinking about here. So that's also it's it's being used to describe the relationship between two things. So. Traveling. To. Vietnam. Is a holiday that I've always. One it to go on. Well, so it's not a great sentence, though traveling to Vietnam is something that I've always wanted to do. Again, that is is a connecting words. Yeah. So let's let's. Go on, and we can see that there are lots of pronouns here. Little exercise for us to do, pronoun or not. So keeping in mind that a pronoun is a word which takes the place of a noun, sort the following words into the correct circle. That should say so. Which is a pronoun and which is not a pronoun here? Is orange a pronoun or not a pronoun? Oops. Orange is not a prse. Absolutely. It is not a pronoun. Orange good. Is yours a pronoun? Yours is pronabsolutely. Yours is a pronoun. Excellent. I should. I'll do it. Himself is the. Good himself is a pronoun. And actually going I'm going to add this. We should get a subjects of projects like your, yours. Is is. Mary is not her ners Larry is not a pronouwell done. And it is a perof. Good. Well done. That's Oh, that is. That is not a product. That is a pronoun actually, it's a relative pronoun, which are these ones here? Who? That's which, who's whom. So that does count as a pronoun that. 这么这么一的enough。Good. The home, a home is not a part of kids. Piano piano is not a part of yes. Here ma ea. Brner. Excellent. And that's sort have been done. Fantastic. Very, very good. And again, putting a circle around all of the pronouns in this box. So circle around the pronouns underlining the nouns. 良? 良? 呃。Oh. Say. Good teacher, this is one left. I'm more fine now, left, right at the end, written this. Remember my or. A pronoun, possessive pronoun, it is my, it belongs to me. So. Yes, very, very good. Fantastic though are nouns excellent? Spot the pronououns. So read the sentences below and spot the pronouns which take the place of the noun. There could be more than one. Ash loves to play tennis. She is really good at it. Where is the pronoun there? That's the. No so ash loves to play is correct. You're not you're not correcting the sentences. You're just looking at for where the pronoun is. She is the pronoun Oh, so where's the pronoun on this from? Keta went for a walk and he stopped when he arrived at the cafe. There might be more than one. In this case, there is. And also so there, very well done. And for the next one, the flute is his, not ours, replied Thomas. Where is, where are the two pronouns in that sentence? Yeah. P, and the other one. I don't want. Good. And we taught ourselves how to play cards over the summer break. Again, there were two in this one. Yep, that's one. Absolutely. Reflexive pronoun. The minute. Lovely. Okay, and there's another one. There's a personal pronoun. Half another. What? Oh good. Well done. Absolutely right. Okay, avoid the repetition. Look at the sentence below. How many different pronouns and alternative nouns can you use in 30s to avoid repetition? I don't know what the 30s. So Jamie threw the ball to his friend and the ball almost hit his friend in the face. So I hope the exercise is clear. You've got to think of ways to avoid repetition. So using the same sentence, the same idea with avoiding repetition. So it might be worth us just highlighting where is the repetition. So we've got a repetition of all and we've put a repetiof friends. So those are the two ones that you're focusing on here. How can you avoid repeating? See if you can get there in 30s? But we're trying to avoid repetition here. So we're using the pronouns Jamie through the ball. So it's going to be Jamie Percival through the ball to his friend. And rather than saying bull, we can say, and the ball, and it almost hits his friends in the face. That would be one way of swapping the second ball ll for its, so we avoid repetition. Another way of doing it would be Jamie threthe ball to his friends, and the ball almost hhim in the face. Another way of doing it would be to do both Jamie through the ball. To his friends. Almost, almost hot. D it's him in the face. So that would be to swap both all and friends for pronouns except that accept. That makes sense. Okay. So we're going to do more. We're going to spend the second half of the class I've just got a message from the agency, and we're going to spend the second half of the class doing a little bit of reading and writing. So let's Yeah get rid of this. I'll be sure to send over screenshots of all of those and we'll get to some reading and writing away from the grammar. So be sure to have a pen and paper ready. Turn your camera on, have your headphones very next. Okay. Do you want to have yes, just want to have a readread out of. It so long today will drive into the magical world of. Workhorse chocolate factory will. Explore and. Exhibit from chapter chapter 1919. Boxing in the what is it? Incredible, incredible. Incredible invroom invroom yes. Pair pair your senses for. It's delightful delilight buli ad visitor. Adventure, adventure, after reading the passages will come world. It was detective. Detective detective. Searching for actives and. Addijectives and details that. That be that could describe the science, sounds, smells, tastes and textures experts of really one past marble inventions. Well done. Really, really well done. That was a very difficult passage to live and did absolutely well. So look, we're we're going to it make sure that it's really important actually in these classes, more important than getting any of the questions right, that we make sure to define all of the vocabulary that comes up that we're not sure about. So today I'm going to give it to you in a sentence, see if you can tell me what you think dive means. I'm gonna to say, Michael. Died head first into the lake. When he surfaced. He screamed, told. What do you think dives means here? Died. It was the headache note. So to dive is to do this into water. Yeah, so to dive is this thing. I think often pictures of best St. Oh. Yeah, so here they're saying we're going to dive into the magical world. So it's not a literal meaning of the word, but it's a poetic word saying we're going to we're going to jump in, we're going to jump into the world in the water. Exactly. And magical. Do you know what that word magical means? I don't do. No, no magical and Chinese is to do with magic. So magical medigic belonging, Oh, better goes in Chinese. 神奇。Medical. So to do with magic is something which is impossible to do normally, but with magic, it's possible. So Harry poters is full of magic. So and Willie, do you know Willie wonkers chocolate factory? I don't know if you've ever seen that film. It's A A road darll book. Willie wonker, have you seen this film? But I like chocolate. You've never seen the film? Willie. And the short to factory. It's a very famous book and a famous film about say, factory and we'll define the factory in a second of factory. I don't love it some Yeah is is where you make. 工厂工厂工厂工厂。呃,this is工厂。Oh, Yeah. Oh. Yes. So Yeah, so today we'll dive then as in we're going to dive. We're going to not literally dive, but in a poetic in a poetic sense of the word, we're going to jump in to the magical Willie wonkers. Yes, the chocolate water wonwilly wonker is the man who owns the chocolate factory and he has a chocolate factory. We'll explore an excerpt. So an excerpt just means a part of a book or a little bit of writing. It's a the right thing. Does that make sense? So some rouperfect that's actually really helpful if you amazing even better. Thank you. So we'll explore an excerpt from chapter 19. Chapter 19, do you understand chapter 19? 19 chapter 19 so when you read a book, there are different chapters. This is a shop, so wait, sense. I know the teacher, you know that. Amazing. So focusing on the incredible, what does incredible mean? It's incredible. What is incredible, incredible. Incredible. It mean a fof all incredible means amazing. Incrediamazing, Yeah amazing. Great, maybe wonderful something where you're like, wow, that's a nasa. It's incredible. You can get the Chinese if you like. Incredible. Incredible. Does that make sense? Incredible. Incredible is very, very, very good. Exactly. Very, very, very good. And the inventing room so this is a room in the chocolate factory where they invent things to invent, to know that word to invent. The which means. To create so to invent, to to create something which never existed before this. So great. Oh, does that make sense in Chinese? What is mean? Me, Yeah, amazing. Thank you. Thank you. So. Prepare your senses for a delightful adventure. Delightful again is another word very similar to amazing light. Wait a minute. Wait a minute. I will write down. Yeah do do be making that work. I think it's the most important thing that you can do actually is learn learn all of this vocabulary. So delightful. Okay. 愉快。And an adventure. Have you heard the word adventure before? Do you know what adventure means? Adventures? I don't know. So an adventure is like a really exciting journey. Often often it's more than a journey. Often it's something that's when you go into the venture, you want to achieve something at the end of it. But it's exciting fighting. It's going it's going be difficult. Yeah. 冒险。So after reading the passage, the passage really very similar to excerpts. Same idea, a little piece of writing. It's more like an paraagra that's very similar. We'll become word detectives. Now what is it? Detective. Sherlock Holmes is a detective. If you know Sherlock Holmes. This is a detective, someone who's. Archetyal detective. Yeah. In. Time. Yeah. Yes, great. Thank you. Searching for adjectives, adjectives, important word, if you've not come across that one before, an adjective. Okay. And details that describe the sights, what you can see, the sounds, what you can hear, smells, what you can smell and taste, what you can taste and textures. Again, another difficult word there that we should. Textures is how something feels, so this pillow has a very soft texture. Sense? 形容词。Of Willie wonk's marvelous inventions. And remember, we already had the word to invenso an invention is a thing that you invents. So you could you would say, okay, go to the toilet. Yes, you can. Of course you can. Okay, teacher, and come back. Okay, very it is so. And hopefully this makes more sense now. So today we'll dive into the magical world of Willie wonkers chocolate factory. We'll explore an excerpts from chapter 19, focusing on the incredible invention. Prepare your senses for a delightful adventure. After reading, the passage will become word detective, searching for adjectives and details that describe sights, sounds, smells, tastes, textures, wowonkers, marvelous inventions. So let's go, Charlie and the chocolate factory by Rob. So I think I've already established this. Have you ever watched the movie or read the book of Charlie and the chofactory? No, you haven't watched the film. Well, they're quite good films and and books. I recommend it if you haven't. The film is good and the films are good and the book is good. So let's have a read of this. We'll do it really nice and slowly, beginning with the first sentence. A read, four bucket away. Ve dreamed about the chocolate that he loves, but usually can't. Adora food. Yeah. What is to a food? Really, really good. Well done there. Excellent reading thing. What is to afford me if I say I can't afford to buy a Tesla? Not too expensive. Yeah. So afford is what you can pay, what you have enough money to be able to pay. Oh, not have any, not have more money to pay. Well, if you can afford, that means you can pay. If you can't afford, that means you can't. So that's to afford Chinese. Does that make sense? Has that to do with how much money? You have or do not have. I wouldn't. Oh, we'll the one. Brilliant. Well done. So poor boy Charlie Bucket always dreams about the chocolate that he loves, but usually can't afford, so he doesn't have enough money to buy the chocolate goods. Keep going, Liam. Things come. When change to change change变化。Yeah good well done. When really walk on walk up, head up the very popular. Wonchocolate in empire Emre. And what is it? Yeah, empire. So empire, again, this is used in a kind of poetic sense, but an empire is when a country goes to other countries and invades them, and those other countries become a part of. Okay. 帝国王B国o okay teacher is one, thank you. So yes, announces a contest in which five gold tickets have been hiin the throughout the country. So yes, to announce is to say something to lots of people, to the public to announce MaaS. You go there a picture is what you believe. 都可以的,知道吧。Good. Okay, I'm going to say let's let's finish that done really, really well Liam and lots and lots of notes to send over. I'm gonna to send send all of the pronouns. So we've got personal pronouns, reflexive pronouns, possessive pronouns and. Relative pronouns. And we've got all of these words. Do if you, if you have this spare time, liand, it would be amazing if you can learn some of these words. You know, if you, the more words that you learn in English, the easier it's going to get. It's really as simple as that. So do if you have the spare time. It was lovely to meet you today. I hope you have a wonderful rest of your Monday and take care by Liam. Bye bye.
