Hi, I am. Hello, how are you? Good good. What you do it again? Again, that's a lot of homework we keep forgetting. Yeah. I remember for next week for me, just try and do this week. Right? Next punctuation for us to look at. We're looking at colons today. You remember what a colon is. What does the codon look like? Could you draw me one? A little bit, I think. So we have we forgot. Okay, that's fine. That's why we're looking at it today. So do you want to read what this slide says for me then that will remind you about what they are. Think so. Can you read this slide for me, please, Aiden? What this, a column, a column looks like, this Poon, can be used before a list of words, veruses or clauses. Here is an example. Here are the things you all need, flour to, eggs, cheese and fresh. So. So can you see how they're using it to introduce a list there? Yeah. Here are the things you will need. Colon flour, two eggs, cheese and fresh pul. So it's introducing that list that's coming after it. So the colon comes before the start of the list, then the items in the list are separated by commas, and the, and is used before the last item in the list. This does not need a comma. Okay. Can you read this slide for me? Balons for body points. Clmight also be used to introduce a series of balance points. These are that kitlist of the camping trip, hts camp stove, sleeping bag, foot dry clothes. But so this is the same as a list. It's just that the list is written as you know bullet points like that on top of each other rather than you know next to each other with commas. Same thing though. It says a colon is not always needed to introduce a list. This means that when we are writing a list, we need to make a decision about whether it needs a colon or not. So this is the question we need to ask ourselves. Does the phrase before my list make sense on its own? So if it does make sense on its own, we can use the colon. If it does not, and we should not use one. So here's the example. Can you read this platform forming the examples then? Example, the pots held pencils, rubbers and elastic bands. The pots contains the following pencils, rubbers and electric bands. Good. So can you see how the second list, the pop contains the following that makes sense on its own, but the pot held does not. So we can't put a mica semicola colon after it. That's just the rules. So which one needs a colon? Very good. Next one. Very good. Well done. Okay. So it says, can you write a sentence to go with each of these pictures? Make sure your sentence includes a list introduced correctly with a colon. On the first page, I can understand, but on the second page, what does this mean? What this picture, what does this mean? It's the solar system adit's, the sun. We've got mercury, Venus, earth, Mars, hois connected to the list. Oh, two separate lists. Two separate lists. So so how can I make a list with the sun? How can I make a list with sun and other, other, other planets? Well, you can just list that they are in the solar system. Or maybe you could say which are your favorite, or you know you can definitely make a list with the planets. Just have a little think about it. Have a think about how you could write a list including the planets. Remember adent, don't forget this, don't forget this. Don't forget this, Aiden, if the freerase does make sense on its own, we can use a colon. If it does not, we should not use one. So you need, probably needs a bit more to have a colon in front of it, like the pot held, you know, that that can't have a colon, but the pot contained the following that can have a colon. Think about that. Just going to quickly go into tissue after you felt that again. So just a few corrections here, Aiden. You need these. Materials. Water bottle, pencil, plastic bag, a clock, plastic cup, straw and then we don't want. Yeah when I need to write all of this my the screen, all four. Did that again for me. When I need to write all of those material, the Oh, okay, that's okay. Yeah, that's good now. Hey, have you remembered your commas? Yeah, Yeah. Okay, and then spelling. It's great. I think favorite. It's quite a strange selling favorite. It's like feble rus. Good. Very good. Well done. So these are the examples that they give, but yours were absolutely fine. They say, to conduct t our experiment, we will need many of these items, a bowl, some water, a cd and a pen. Or I am going to compare these planets, mercury, Saturn, Jupiter on earth, you know whatever way. Yeah. Good. Bye. Good. Good, okay, well done. So next we have same punctuation. We've got colons, but we're looking at using them in a different way aent, this time linking two independent clauses. So like two sentences that make sense on their own. Okay, so here we've got the sentence. The safari was amazing. So that's an independent clause because it makes sense on its own. So first we need to just make sure that we really understand the difference between an independent clause that makes sense on its own and a depenclause that does not make sense on its own. Remember, we've spoken about these when we did subordinate clauses, so you can highlight these for me to show me which ones are independent. And which ones are dependent? I think you've got them the wrong way round, Aiden. So the wrong way around this thing would be like this. So the how you've done them, the red is dependent and the blue is independent. Yeah so my dog loves banana. We visited London. We will go to the moon. These are independent sentences. Yeah, they make sense on their own. But these ones, when we visited London, because my dog loves bananas, if we go to the moon, those are dependent. They need the rest of the information to make sense. So we are focusing on joining two independent clauses. So they must make sense alone, but they must also be linked in some way. If we're going to use the colon in the following examples, decide whether it is possible to link the independent clauses or if a full stop is needed. So the first one, James enjoys playing tennis. He has a powerful serve. Could we link those with a colon or do they need to be separated by a full stop? Separate. I, they are related, they are linked. So we can put a colon. Your serve is about how you start a tennis match. So they are linked. What about this one? Link, good. What about this one? Drink water? Yes, of course you can. Okay. So what think about this one? Can we link these or not link? Think so. After school, I played outside. Tomorrow is my birthday. No ked, they're not linked, are they? Yeah, that should just be a full stop. Two different sentences. Next one. We could link those. They're both about how she worked. She got what she worked for. She really earned that reward. They are linked together. Where should the colons gs be in the following sentences? He was late for school. His own clock hadn't gone up. I have little time to learn. He was. Hiden, you need to add in the colon. 疯了。So have a think, Aiden. Remember that these would be two separate sentences. So do you think he was late for school? His would be a sentence. No, so that colon needs to move this one. Okay, this one, have another go as well. Because does this make sense out? The water is getting murky. Does that make sense as a sentence? No. So it needs to move. Yes. Oops. Again, would this make sense as a sentence? Aiden the fifth, tank out, the water is getting murky. Or you need to clean, I guess maybe. But no, try that one again for me. You need to clean the fish. Tank out. The water is getting murky. There we go. Oops, good. Okay, it says choose a picture, write two independent clauses to describe the picture, and separate them with a colon. So this could be an example. Take all of this for only one with one picture. So you can choose which one you want to write about. Adden, remember, it needs to be two independent clauses. So two sentences that are related to each other that you can link. This was the example you need to see in the fish tank out, the water is getting murky. Very high is not a sentence. Remember, you need to have a subject and a verb to make a sentence, so that that that can't work. I will push you. That's fine. But the next part needs to be its own sentence, but related to that, which is why they can be linked. So this part is not correct. It's not a sentence. Adden have a think. Does that make sense on its own? Very Highness, like an aeroplane. E, would that make sense as a sentence? It needs to be a sentence on its own that is related to the one before it that you can link it to, like this example. You need to clean the fish tank out. The water is getting murky. These are both individual sentences. It's just we can link it together because they are related. But they are both make sense on their own as well. Yeah, have another go for me. This plant can live in a very hot place. This plant is puts. Can you just help me with what that word is, Aiden? Yeah I. Forgot to how to spell this Yeah what word is okay like this? Cactus. Let's just practice. This, don't forget your capital letter. This plant can live in a very hot plate. This plant is a cactus s. Have a go. Another quiz. Good. Now have a read of that. Spices are used in Indian cooking. It enhances the flavor of curries and other spicy dishes. Oh, it's number one. Good. Good. Yeah, we've read this one already, haven't we? Good. Oh we need next is okay, sorry as my fault. Day. Yeah, well done. Oh, you were correct. You were correct. Accidenclick like changing my Yeah, that's okay, don't worry. Okay, for homework, I'm going to give you a few of these colons tasks to have a go with. Okay? Hopefully, you get time to finish them this time. Okay, Aiden, right, well done today. Next lesson we'll have a look at semicolons, so similar but different. Okay, enjoy the rest of your week. Okay, Aiden, thank you very much. Bye bye.
