Hi, Jack. Hello hi how are you? Good, good, good. Nice to meet you. My name is Lily. We are going to be looking at some reading skills. I think I got told that you today, is it called a maps test or something? That you do an map test? Yeah Yeah. And that you didn't feel very confident with the sort of reading questions and the comprehension questions and the vocabulary. Is that right? Yeah, Yeah. Cool. So what we're going to do is we're going to you know work on some reading skills together. And each lesson we will read different sort of passages. They might be fiction and nonfiction, and we'll practice those sort of comprehension skills bit by bit. But through doing that, we'll also be practicing lots of vocabulary skills and learning lots of new words and things like that. So hopefully that will help you to you know understand more of the words or you know help to make a guess with words that you're not quite sure on. So I show you. Where's the picture I'm after? Not this one. So these are the kind of basically all of the different reading skills that we have. So when you do a reading test, they will be testing you on each of these different areas. So it's really important that we understand all of these skills, you know and not just maybe one or two, because all of these questions will come up. So we're going to focus on one area for each lesson so that we can really sort of feel confident with each area before we move on. So we have also, we have these dogs here that kind of hack, you know, help us along the way. I don't know why they're dogs, but they are. So we've got vocabulary, you know, working out unknown words and phrases. We've got retrieval, which is simply, you know, finding facts and details, summary, you know, to summarize, bless me, the main ideas, inference, which is when looking for clues and you know using evidence to back up our ideas. Prediction, which is when we're like you know trying to guess what what might happen next. Using clues. We've got comparing from casting and commenting, which is all like maybe comparing characters. It could be looking at differences or similarities, commenting on things, lots of different things to that one. And author choice, which is thinking about why the author has written the text in that way, why they've used certain words or phrases and things like that. So we've got all of these today. We're going to start at the top with the vocabulary work because obviously I know that this is an area that you're not feeling very comfortable with, but also it's just the first one, so that works out pretty well for us. So have you got a like a paper and pen or something, Jack, because it might be helpful for you to create some notes and maybe create a bit of a like a word bank of all the words that we learn together throughout these lessons? Yeah. Yeah. Have you got paper and pen? Yeah. And I'm just very quickly going to go and get some tissue. I'm just. Okay, so here we have vocabulary skill or here we're calling it vocabulary, Victor. This you know dog help would remember. So when we're looking at the m, the vocabulary skills, it's all about giving or explaining the meaning of words in context. So that basically means he's there to help us work out the meaning of words that we don't know. We're going to do that by looking at words or phrases that we're unsure of in the context that they're in. So that means, you know, using the story or the text so far, the sentences that are around them, what we already know, to figure out what the word must mean. Because you know, with vocabulary, Jack, it's impossible for everybody to know every single word, the meaning of all of the words. And you know, even when I read things, sometimes I don't know the meaning of a word. And rather than asking somebody to tell me outright or googling it or whatever, you can you know make a bit of a guess and use the story to help you try and work out what that word might mean. Now obviously, it's always gonna na be a guess and that guess might not be correct, but at least sandwtrying ying to you know think about what these words might mean and not just saying, Oh, we don't know them, and sometimes we might be right with our guests. So it's important that we try and do that. So vocabulary questions are in lots of different reading exams. There's lots of different styles of questions. We have this kind of question, which is called the closest in meaning question. Do you think you could read the question for me? We're not going to answer it. I just want you to read it. The signners cat crouched on the tree wrench, peering down the Gabby with brilliant. Which word is closet cloessed in ning to crotch? So then you've got all these different options. We've got balance. Ced squattered trembled and pounced. So for this one, they're giving you ideas already, which makes it a bit easier. But essentially what you're having to do is think of a synonym for crouch. Do you know what a synonym is? Jack? Have you heard of that before? A synonym? Yeah. Have you heard of that word before? The same meaning of tools? Yeah, good. So same or similar meaning for word? Good. So we've got the word crouched. What would be a similar word crouched? What does it mean when someone is crouching? Jack, how would you explain crouch. Like. Stretch. Redo, you mean this one here, this one? Or are you just trying to use a different thing like this? Not this stretch, but Yeah, it's it's more it's like kind of like the opposite of stretch. The crouch is like imagine this is someone standing normally and then this would be somebody crouching. Like that. Oh Yeah. It's like crouching is like sort of bending over like that. Yeah. So which of these words do you think would match up with that? Yeah, so maybe. Which one do you think squatyeah or squated? It would be squattered because this is basically what we would call a squat that it would be squattered. Yeah. Trembled is to like shake. Shaking basically is trembling if you're scared. So that's not actually to do with you know your body movement in that way. Okay, good. Then we have an alternative wording question. So this is the type of question that gives you an example of a phrase. And you have to think of another way. The author could have written it, but keeping the meaning exactly the same. Yeah. So do you want to have a go reading this one for me? We restored on the branch. Considering her option. What does considering her option mean in this sentence? Yeah, Yeah, Yeah. Good. So she resettled on the branch considering her options. So the the only bit you're thinking of is this bit here. So which of these would be the closest in meaning to considering her options? I think. I think it's the. Thinking, what about to do? Yeah, good. Thinking about what to do. How do you know it's that one? I'm concerting an option like choosing what to do. Yeah, Yeah, good. Considering is the same as thinking, isn't it? So it's helpful with these kind of ones. If we can work out maybe just one of the words considering is the same as thinking, then that kind of tells us it's going to be that option. You know, considering is not the same as changing or looking or wishing. So we know it can't really be any of those ones. Yeah, good. Okay. We also have this one, a definite question. This was a very, very common question. So this one literally gives you an example of a word or a phrase in the text, and you have to explain what it means in your own words. So this is getting a bit trickier now because you're not being given options. You have to explain it yourself. So here we have the question. Gabby secured her feet and hands and climbed higher, and it asks us, what does secured her feet and hands mean, do you think? Beaten her me secucured her feet and hands the use use. It's not quite used. If something is kept secure, that's a little bit more than just using it. So I could say, like, I'm going to secure a shelf onto this wall. You know, I'm going to secure, I don't know, picture onto the wall. You know, this picture, I'm going to secure it onto the wall. So I can't just put it there. If I just sort of put it on the wall, it would just fall down, wouldn't it? I need to secure it onto the wall so that it's you know safely attached to it and it's not just going to fall off. So if she's securing her feet and hands when climbing, what could that mean? Thank you. So it's kind of like she's trying to, she's probably climbing a wall or a hill or something, isn't she? So she's making sure that her hands and her feet are you know safely on whatever she is climbing so that she doesn't just flip off and fall down. Yeah. So to secure something, it just means to make it safe. Yeah, that's kind of what they're saying. Okay, a few more to go for. Go over. So we also have the find and copy. We can't answer this question because obviously we haven't got a text. But essentially for this one, you look through the text and you're literally finding a word that fits into what the question says and you just copy it down in your answer box. You don't change it at all. So it can be really easy if you know if you know what it's asking you to, but obviously if you're a bit unsure about it can still be quite tricky. You might have to do a bit of guessing. Then we've got multiple choice questions. Again, this is the same where they're just asking you to find and copy words, but this time you need to find two words. Another multiple question where you just to it's very similar to a tick question. It's just they're asking you to circle instead. But instead of taking a box, you would just circle one of these. So you know, pretty simple. Okay. So let's have a go. We can do some quite simple ones first just to keep. You know just to see how we get on. So here we have picture and a text. Like this and it just says, can you circle the word that describes the birthday cake? Whsting cake. So which is the word that describes the birthday cake? Yeah, good. Big. Well done. That's the descriptive word, isn't it? And then we have a synonym question here as well. It says, oops, the word which means the same as the word that you have chosen. 嗯。Not large large good, because large is a synonym for big, isn't it? Okay. I think that's good. I just wanted to check that kind of level. So we will have a go with a bit of a longer text. So I want you to read this story for me. Jack called two little ducks. And as you're reading or after you've read, could you highlight if there's any vocabulary for me that you don't understand? Yeah. Jft jumped from her seat almost most faster in spof light, like rocket lunching into space. The third is hand into the air. An enormous sound seemed to explod with such worreason that it it was as if it had and accelerate from her his feet. Yes, she ff did the. Dotted card that he been using to backtrack of the number high above his head. It dance early in the air, seemingly a proud strength of the victory. Two the dogs, that's all, drive and been waiting for for what had seemed like ours. And anxiously his forehead, his grip and his face had contrated with concentration and on his. Over over the only vscupon the stage had stood a familiar figure with called like power the poto decide which number would be chosen as random from the spfrom the spinning container she had been a all that stood between Jaff and some hundred minutes two little dogs to drive to himself almost. 就as the whole group gave a son of greack quack did lunch in his face he was a weman good。Okay. So could you do some highlighting for me? Any words that were not sure on their meanings? Does it matter how many? Yeah just you you tell me, be honest and then or you can highlight it or you can either like circle them, underline them or there is a highlighting tool that you can like do a thing over like that. Whichever, I don't really mind. Let me know when you've highlighted them more year finish. So this is where you might want to write down some of these definitions, Jack, here, because it really help you if you've, if we've got them written down, you know, to use blade lessons as well. If it comes up so ecstatically. It's a very strange word to spell that one ecstatically. It's a verb, sorry, an adverb with that lon the end. Essentially, if someone is ecstatic, it's like they are so very excited. And and happy. Yeah feeling very excited. Unhappy. It's more than just a happiness. It's like, wow, you know this is the best thing ever. It's kind of what it's like. So he's like jumping around. He's that happy. Okay, launching interspace. Okay. So a rocket launching into space is like kind of. How can I like like sort of throwing and moving up into space? But look, it's like going, I guess. It's quite a hard word to describe moving, going. Limsy is something if something is flimsy, it's kind of like it's quite it's not strong and stable. You know like this bit of tissue is flimsy, you know like it can break very easily, whereas this apple pencil is not flimsy. I couldn't just you know snap it or rip it. So it's like. Light and wobbly could easily be broken. Merrily, merrily again is like a. Happily. Anxiously so feeling anxious is is feeling worried. So doing so anxiously doing something means doing something. With worry and feeling nervous. Yeah it's like you know you're a bit scared kind of. Concentration okay so concentration is like being focused, focusing and thinking. So like you need to concentrate on your work, Jack Yeah need to focus on it and think about it carefully. A container is something that holds other things, like a box, like a bot can be a container Yeah or a folder or a bag Yeah they're containers because you store things inside them and launch is the same as launching. They're the same. Yeah launching slash launch just means so he did launch into space. It means that he went, you know he moved into space. Let me know when you've finished noting those down, Jack. Here I can give you some time if you need it. Right, but I think it would be helpful for you to create a bit of a vocabulary bank Jack Yeah if you're struggling with your vocabulary, itprobably help you if you write down the words and their meanings. Yeah. Let me know when you finished you. Yes. Okay okay. So questions now then. So these are all going to be vocabulary questions like the ones that we were looking at earlier. Yeah. So I'll put them onto the board so you can read them nice and clearly. So start off with the multiple choice ones. Phoon says it was as if it had accelerated from his feet. Which word is closest in meaning to accelerated? Accelerated. Yeah. It's the. The not the balance not best. What does accelerated mean? The balance. Accelerate. Let's have a look at it in the sentence. So he thrust his hands into the air, and an enormous sound seemed to explode with such fury that it was as if it had accelerated from his feet. So to balance is like you know, balancing straight on something, isn't it? This is accelerating from his feet, and it's talking about, you know, launching into space, rusting his hands in the air, exploding. So it's going to be with movement, isn't it? Which one do you think it might be? Okay, so I told you what trembled men earlier. Trembled is shaking. So one thing I am noticing, Jack, is that this word was used in the text, and I'm not sure that we know what this word means. So why didn't we circle it when we were going through the words? So if youhave circled it and said that you didn't know what this means, then I would have told you the meaning, and then that would have helped us answer this question, wouldn't it? Yeah, so let's write it down. Accelerated is to move very quickly. To move very fast. You know, you know or at great speed. So you know like in a plajack, a car can accelerate. It can go from going very slow to put the foot down om accelerate. Yeah, it's gone from being like this to celeerate very fast. So now which of these words do you think it might be closest to meaning to. You take it for me, whichever one you think. Good. Yeah, it's sped. Sped is the past tense of speed. It's like saying it's, you know, to speed along. It's saying it's spared, you know, past tense. Well done. Okay. The next one says his face had contorted with concentration and tension. What does contorted mean in this sentence? Tione. Let's face that. So in the text. Oh, maybe this one. Okay. So his forehead had driand, his face had imported with concentration and tension when his dabber had hovered over the only vacant square. So just think about the fact that it's you're on the right lines in that. Obviously it's his face moving, but he's concentrating and tension. That's not quite a smiley face if you're concentrating in you're feeling tense so wouldn't quite be that one. So you're really close. Which one do you think it might be instead? His face is moving. So to contort means to like to move you know and change. So which one do you think it might be instead? Well, Reder means that his face is changing color our so that's not quite moving, is it? That's more about the pular and the look of his face changing. But I mean, like the way his face is is you know moving around like that. So have another go for me. Okay, so it's not that one either. Jack Weldon forguwell done for having a go. So it's not sadness either. So Jack, these are the things that you need to focus on. It's the concentration and tension. So he's not sad. He's not crying. Yeah if it was like contorted with and he was crying or whatever, then that would be sadness. Concentrating isn't a sad thing. That's why I'm saying it's not. It's not sadness and it's also not a happiness. Who wouldn't be smiling and supporting is not to do with color. Our so it's not that his face is getting more red, it's that it's twisting out of shape. Conttorted is is a twisting and a moving. So it's actually this one. Yeah so even if we don't know what contorted means, we can kind of work it out by thinking about the other ones and this other details they've given us. Concentration is not a sadness or a happiness or a change in color, whatever. It's just that his face is changing shape. But that's okay. That's why we're here. That's why we're practicing all of this to you know get more confident with these kind of things. So don't worry, we will keep practicing. Okay, have a go at this one next. We've got two find and copy questions now. The first one, do you want to read the question for me? Look at. The paragraph again, in two little dogs, that's all. Jeff, find and copy one word from that closest meaning. I empty. So it's in this paragraph, it's telling you which paragraph to look in. For a word, that means empty. That. Is that this one? So have a look at your notes. Have a look at what we, what we said anxiously means. So not this one. Yeah, not that one. Doesn't quite make sense, is it? For that meaning? So what does it mean if something is empty, Jack, does it mean to be empty? It mean like. Right? Thank you. So empty is like there's there's nothing there. There's nothing inside it. So if I've had a box, this box is full of sweets. Yeah there's loads of sites inside here in this box. But this box, the blue box, it's empty. There's nothing inside it. It's empty. Yeah, that's what empty means. Have nothing inside. So have a little look. Can we find a word which is describing something as being empty just for a different word? No. This one. Good. Well done. Yeah. Vacant square means the square was empty. Good. So now all you do is copy that on this line. Good, perfect. Okay. The next one, another similar question to that one. Can you read the question for me? The it's. Maybe in the. Similthis projob shared Tory find a copy two different words from sentence were shouldaughter. Ted and appeared to her positive feelings. Good. So this time we want two words from this sentence. Ced, Yeah, and I'll show you where it is in the text as well. I'm sorry. Okay. Yeah, Yeah. It danced Merin the air, seemingly as prothe strength of their share factory. Good, so two different words which show the dotted card appear to have positive feelings. So which two words are like positive descriptions of feelings? Wow, good. That would be one. Yeah you could write that one up, out and number one. Good. And then the second one, can we find the second word? Merrily, merrily perfect. Well done. Yeah, you can write that one out as well for me. Perfect. Well done. Really good, Jack. Okay, we've got four minutes left, pretty much. Let's see if we can just do this last question, right? Let's challenge ourselves. So the last question says, and as the hoerupted with sound of quack, quack, Jeff truly did launch into space, he was over the moon. And it says, two, the best words to match the meaning of the sentence above. So we need to choose from two. So the first one says, as the whole became raukers dangerous, silent, which one do you think makes the most sense for this part? 嗯。Quack, quack. Yeah. So how would we describe that? As you know, the whole erupted with sound. Is that going to be a raukers hall, a dangerous hall, or silent? Which of those would make the most sense for that description? I think rokers worthis one. Yeah. Well, well, we need to choose one from here and then one from here. So the whole became raucous. Jeff was ecstatic. That would be perfect youneed to give both of those answers. Yeah, well done. Excellent. Really good, Jack. Okay, for your homework, I'm going to give you another reading text and some questions to answer for me. Okay, so it's going to be this one here. You've got just a little bit of reading at the top and then you've got four questions, four vocabulary questions to answer. So just have a go at that one for me. Oh, so I'm just going to set this homework now, Jack. Yeah, don't worry. Nothing for you to do at the moment. All right. Okay, right, Jack. So I've set that homework on there with the text and the questions and that's all on class in Yeah so if you can try and submit it back on here and obviously we can mark it by our next lesson. Yeah so try and get that done for next week. Just paa go. If there's anything you're not sure on, then you can just leave it and we'll look at it together. Yeah. Okay. Well done, Jack. You worked really hard today. Yeah, really good work. Enjoy the rest of your weekend and I'll see you next week. Yeah, thank you very much. Thank you. Bye bye.
