James, what games did you play? What is that game? Showell later, you have fun today. Yes, good. Okay. So for this lesson, it's going to be a bit different because it is called lesson one, simply because I save this lesson to do near the end of this section because we ordid for one of our previous lessons. We already did something similar about kids doing house work. Do you remember that one? Yes, yes, I wanted, because the topics are so similar, I wanted to give it give you a bit of time to have a gap in between those two lessons because if we started off with this, it would have been very close to the previous session we did. So you would have, you wouldn't have really been that and informatable helpful for you. So I waited to do this lesson. So this lesson, we're going to talk about housework again, but we're going to explore a bit of different topics within it and different advice or debates. Does that make sense? Yeah. Okay. So just in case you look at this topic and think, Oh, it's Oh, I think I've done this before, you've done some similar to it, but I saved this other lesson to do later to do it now. Is that okay? Okay, cool. So. And we'll go through these words versus Abella. So debate, what is a debate? Just to recap, because we haven't thought a lot about the definitions in a while. To argue with a group of people. Yeah. So to argue with a group of people about a topic, right, about emotion. And there's two sides. There's the affirmative team and the negative team. Does the affirmative team agree or disagree with the motion? What about the negative same? Disagree? Yeah, exactly. What a statement, Isabella. Tell something. It's to tell something, to inform someone of something. It's quite a simple sentence. There's no really explanation or examples. It's just saying it how it is, evidence, what's evidence is Abella. Let other people believe your emotion and. That's all. So instead of believing emotion, it's believing their perspective. So the motion is something you either agree or disagree with. So instead of saying evidence is something to help people believe your motion, is to help people believe your stance on the motion or perspective of the motion. So whether you Agreus through the motion, it's supporting that. So evidence can of be numbers, statistics, quotes from other people to things that people have said. Yeah. So it's just as to help support what you want to say logically. What does logically mean? Good. Not. Having not letting other people too. To. Don't know what are you talking about? Yeah. So logically, so what is logic as a as? So let's let's pull it pull this word apart. Logic. Do you know what logic is as about. I don't know. So logic is something that that makes sense. So it's something that's rational. Rational means it's not something that is that's a silly idea, right? It makes sense. So for example, logic is okay. If I want to get a good grade for my test, I need to study for it. That makes sense, right? That's not a silly idea. That makes sense. Yeah. If I want to do well on my test, I need to study for it. Another something that could be logic is. Because climate change is getting very bad. When climate change is getting worse, I'll try to stop using my car so much to stop the pollution. That logic, it makes sense. Did you understand what I mean by that? Yes. Yeah. So rotically is in a way that makes sense or in a way that shows reasoning. So another way for logic would be like good reasoning. So logically, there's in a way that follows logic or reason. So could you write that down for me? Okay, well done. So that's from mulgic clean self reliance. So again, let's pull apart this word. Do you know what self alliance means? First off? I don't like. Okay, so again, let's pull apart this word. So self is myself, yourself. It's just someone, right? Reliance means to rely on someone, means to depend on someone. Do not depend means. And not rely ay you know so rely is just a short form word for reliance. So it's the verb for reliance. Yeah. Yeah to rely to depend on someone, to need someone to sell. If that's what rely or reliance means, what do you think self reliance means? Rely on ourselves. Yeah exactly. So it means we rely on ourselves exactly is about that. So self reliance, we rely or depend on ourselves. So in other words, we are independent. Yeah. Could you write that down? Yes. Okay, well done in his Mella. So moving on, structure. Do you remember what the word structure means? Yeah, what does? It mean. Debating structure. About. So it includes what you're gonna say, but what structure means by definition is the way that something is arranged. The way something is arranged or organized, I suppose that makes sense. Yes. So for example, exactly like you said, Isabella, in a debate, the structure would be first speaker of the firmative team, first speaker of negative team, second speakers, third speakers, and then the introduction, body, conclusion. That would be the structure. Okay, father Isabella. So moving on to next. One argument was argument Isabella. You are not. When someone thinks other people's opinion, they don't agree. And exactly. So essentially, an argument, by definition, means giving a reason in to support an idea or perspective. So like you said exactly in debates, Isabella, are given an argument for, for example, why you agree or you disagree with emotion. Does that make sense? Yes, Yeah. Okay. Could you write that down for me? Welcome, miss. Bella, moving on to the next one. What do you think critically means? Do you know what it means? They don't so critically. Write es down critically means to. Think of whoops, think. Of some thinthrows and cons. Just need to think of the pros and cons of something. So for example, if I think critically of smoking, I would think about how smoking can be really bad for your lungs. That's me thinking critically of something. Or if I think critically of homework or exams based on all exams, thinking critically exams, can you be thinking that exams in the long term aren't a good way of measuring something or aren't a good way of measuring someone's intelligence? They're very stressful to students. They're not always tailored to their they exams might not really represent intelligence. It might be measuring something only in one way that doesn't fit all students. So that's been trying to think critically of something. When I'm trying to think of either the goods or the bads of something, does that make sense? A what else are you confused about with it, just so I could give a bit more information? To say other people not good. Yeah. So if I could also do with Fei could say that I could think critically of someone. I could think critically of maybe my friend, maybe my friend did something that I don't know how to feel about and I think critically of her and I think that wasn't very nice what she did that's also thinking critically of something or someone. So often it means when you think critically, often it means thinking of the bad things of something or someone, that it can mean both. Does that make sense? Yeah, could you write that down for me? I can't see the whole letter. Yes, I can't. Well done, Isabella. Start moving on to the next one. So we're did critically long day. Belyeah. Exactly. So it can have two definitions actually. One, belonging, if it's a noun, could mean someone's belonging is someone's object or item. That's one definition for belonging, if it's a noun. So it's an object. However, another definition of belonging. Well, actually they're both pronounced. I think well, there would essentially go are just two still different definitions of belonging. One can mean someone's object or item. The other can mean a sense of belonging, a sense of being welcomed into a place. So for example, if I go to my best friend's house, and I've never met their family before, but I go in and I'm welcomed and they're happy to see me, they treat me as if I'm their family, right? They treat me as if I'm welcomed into their family, as if they know me and they love me, I could feel a sense of belonging, a sense that I am home in this place. I am welcomed into this place. So that's one definition of belonging. The other is just someone's belonging would be someone's object or items. So for example, in an airport, often they refer to your suitcase or luggage as your belonging. Does that make sense? Okay. Could you write that down to me? Okay, well done, iszela. So last and final word nearly there and convince so to convince someone, what does that mean? Oh, let someone believe you. Yeah, exactly. They're all done. Iswell el, that's exactly it. To make them believe you, to make them see that you are correct. Exactly right, Isabella. Well done. So any questions for these worlds we've went through so far? No. Okay. So moving on with the lesson. So we've already watched this lesson. We've already watched this video. On debating, right? So do you remember this video with the uniform? Yeah. Oops. So instead of watching that, I'm going to show you a different video a bit more relevant to the motion of homework. Is that okay? Yes, okay, let me pull it up. But not homework, housework, sorry, should kids do housework? So that's the notion when my housework is chores to do in the house or Res, chores just means housework. It means having to do things in the house to make it cleaner, to make it better, or to help out your parents. Okay. I need to share it with you. Okay, can you see it? Yes. Okay, cool. So again, housework or chores, they mean the same thing. They're just doing work in the house to motably help your parents. Shannon Otto is a full time homemaker. All the same, keeping up with three year old Hannah joy, five year old Joshua and six year old Charles eats up the bulk of her spare time. And then there's the housekeeping. It takes a lot of effort, and I think it's a lot easier if you do try to stay on top of it. I try to stay on top of it. Luckily for Shannon, her children are now old enough to help with the chores. They take care of their room. They put away their toys right after they've played with them. They clean up the craft table. They take out the trash, put away their laundry. Of course, as any pediatrician will tell you, it's important that George be appropriate to the age of the child. So small children, small chores. Big kids, bigger chores. So with a small child, when you're cleaning house, they could do something that's appropriate for them, like emptying the trash cans. I trash can, I have to twist it up and put the twition it. And then I walk to the front door with it, and I open the door and I throw it out, and then I put it by the cone of the grass. And then that's where the judgment is set up. And remember that no matter how simple the chore, a child will need to be taught how to do it properly. You can't just tell them because we assume that because we know how to do it, they know how to do it. So you want to show them the first time, and then you don't want na expect perfection. The important thing is to start early and be consistent. You cannot wait until a child is ten or eleven years old and say, Oh, by the way, we all live here together. You have to help out. You want to let children know that chores are a part of living in a household, that it's not punishment. It's something that everyone has to pitch in and do. In fact, Shannon prefers not to use the word chore, if only because it makes a routine task sound unpleasant. And to her credit, the kids don't really differentiate between their housework and their play. I worthe planes, I take out the your ash, and I make my bed, and I sit on the couch and read books. And Hannah joyy's favorite chore, I like bacookies. Of course, even the most cooperative child will sometimes shirk his duties when Charles makes his bed, for instance, sometimes I just push it under and don't do anything with the covers. Crafty kids aside, what happens if your child flat out refuses to complete his chores? Tell what the consequence is if it's not done, and then you keep the consequence. You don't nag, you don't plead, and you certainly don't do the chore if the child doesn't do it. Because what that teaches the child is, huh? If I just wait long enough shecome and do it herself because sheget tired of it. Shannon Otto thinks that shores can, in a sense, be their own reward. I think it also teaches them a work ethic. So I think it's really good to teach them Young so that they do take pride in what they do and do it to the best of their ability. Okay so that I mean we we really have talked about chores haven't we we talked a bit about what we be doing in the house we you help that in know to just sort of recap lesson going over the basics of a debate and maybe perhaps thinking of more ideas for a debate for chores. So again, and debate is about different people having different opinions on things and they are trying to express their opinions. There's only two sides, one sporting, one opposing. Again, this is just a recap lesson to make sure that you haven't forgotten the basics of a debate because we've talked about lots of different motions. We've talked about lots of different motions, haven't we? So I'm just making sure that you remember the basics of a debate, and that's why I saved his lesson for now. So again, let's think about an example of a disagreement. So can you think of a recent or any disagreement you've had with someone and how you solve that? How do you resolve that disagreement? I disae. Going to the. 2。And I argued. To not going to the park. So what did you say to and argue with them of why you shouldn't go to the park? Where did you say? How did you convince them? I don't have time. It's too. So you talked about your schedule, right? You talked about how this might stress tch you out even more because you don't have time. So that's an example of a good argument, isn't it? Yes, okay, that's a wild beneella, but did you convince them in the end? I didn't go to the park, so you did convince them. Yes, okay, done, Isabella. So. So again, this is the debate structure we've talked about in the very, very beginning weeks and weeks ago. But again, there's a topic. What's another word to the topic? Motion. Motion exactly says a topic. There's two teams. So what are the two teams? Names again, what's another word for the positive? Affirmative, exactly. Well done. And it's preparation time and then the actual presentation of the debate. So could you read this first part for me? A topic is schosen to debate and is not right and wrong or wrong, as long as you have strong. Arguments and evidence. And the example they give is, should children have pets? So again, there is no right or wrong because the whole point is that there's two different teams, right? There's no right or wrong as long as you can support it. So again, like you said, Isabella, fans of team supports or agrees with a statement. Negative team is against or disagrees with the statement. So could you read the preparation part for me? They are ded with time to prepare. You can discuss with your teammates. And then what about the presentation? Each speaker presenpresents for a set. Amount of time speakers change between the teams. Okay. So world and Isabella. So again, preparation, what does preparation mean? What does it mean to prepare? Have time to. Would how would you define and prepare. To research Yeah to research to basically just get ready for the debate, get ready with what you want to say. And that includes research. And you can also obviously talk with your teammates about it. Presentation, like you said, is the actual speaking part of the debate. It's the debate that's most commonly known when you speak to your arguments. And again, speakers change between the teams. So again, it's first speaker of affirmative, first speaker of relative, second speais, third speakers. And that's how that's a structure. So what would you say are some benefits of debating, Isabella? And help us. Learn. I speaking skills, what else? And. Learn stage. Yes, to work on your stage, right, to not be as scared anymore. Any other reasons? Cool. To win. To win. Yeah sir. Benefits are debating. So learning to think critically. So learning to think with different perspectives. So you don't just look at one perspective, you look at many speaking in public confidently and logically. So learning how to speak in public, not just confidently. So confidence is, you know, being confident, being believing believing in yourself, being proud of your work, being proud of your arguments, as always, as logically so, speaking in a way that makes sense, and then again, of everyone listening to each other. So the reason why people debate instead of fighting, for example, is because everyone has a chance to say what they want to say. That's why debating is commonly done to sort of reach a compromise or to reach a point where both people can say what they want and you reach a sort of conclusion or a way to solve the issue. And for a debate, everyone has a voice and everyone can take turns to speak. So today's topic is, do you think kids should do housework? So has your perspective on this motion changed since last time? So what do you currently think about this motion? Do you think kids should do housework or should not do housework? I do house work. Should do house work. Yeah, Yeah how come we'll get into more reasons later. But how come firstly, how come just in general, do you think kids should do housework? Children can help parents to. Not the children can help parents to let parents not doing too much housework. Yeah, that's one very good reason, Isabella. So I was going to ask you some questions, Isabella, and then you can answer them for me. Is that okay? Yes. So do you get given household chores and do you like them? Household. What is the household household chores or just choor work that you do in the house? Sometimes sometimes do. I don't like it. How come? Because. It's very tired. So we're tired. Tired would be to say that it makes you tired. So again, let's look at the word tired just in terms of grammar. So tired would be talking about. How something makes you feel tiring is talking about. The thing that makes you tired so for example, tired would be I felt tired because I did. I feel tired. I feel tired because I did chores. Tiring is chores are very tiring. So tie, it refers to you. Tyring refers to the chores. Does that make sense? What can't you see? The word. Okay wait refers to new. Can you see it now? Yes, yes. So again, the word tired or tiring, they're used in different ways. So you have to use them in a way that makes grammatical sense. So tired refers to you. It talks about how something makes you feel. You feel. So I feel tired because I did chores that would be grammatically correct. So tired refers to you and your feeling. Tire ring refers to the thing that makes you tired. So for example, chores are very tiring. Does that make sense? Wait, could you write that down for me? Yes. I'm finish. Okay about so moving on to the next question. What do your parents do any housework? 嗯,买大的烧拍克克。So your dad cooks. What about washing the dishes or cleaning? Who does that? Maybe I is I姨。So there are household chores in your there are tools to do in your house. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. So based on your experience, Isabella, and your perspective, from what age do you think kids should do tours? Maybe. 526 years old Yeah so do we get from a Young age. But not too much. Not too much. So is it like the video we watched where you do a certain type of choore or amount of chores based on the age? Type of tool. So for example, if you're very Young, you don't do it as difficult chores as if you would do if you were older. So you you the type of choore. So what choore you do or what sort of housework you do and how much of it you do depends on your age. Is that what you're saying? Yeah, Yeah. Okay. So again, introducing your argument. We've talked about this before, but just going over again some ways to introduce your arguments of what you want to say. I strongly believe it's obvious that it's clear that or in my opinion, so these are different sentence starters to introduce what you want to say. So. So this is an example structure you could use for a debate about housework. So for example, housework is important because blah blah, firstly, it's important for children to do chores because blah, blah blah is a given reason. Another important thing about doing housework is another reason. Finally, why didn't you do some housework and blah blah? So this is an example structure to that you could use for a debate about housework. So do you see the structure of how it's layered, of how you sort of have first seconds or fairly or finally and you have those transition sentences, so sentences that make it sort of have a flow? Do you see that? Yeah, okay, so. I'll give you around maybe six to seven minutes to do what we normally do, where you write down pros and cons for each stance. So for example, should oops, let me, let me change that font should do housework. So kids should do housework. Kids should not do housework. Pros, cons, pros, cons. And then. Okay, so I'll give you around seven minutes ish, six or seven minutes to complete as much as much of this as you can. Does that make sense? Yeah. And if you've have any questions throughout, you can obviously ask me. Okay, okay, cool. I'll give you around 66 minutes, five to six minutes maybe because of the time. Okay. Okay, Isabella, so how far done are you? I didn't finish, should not count. That's okay. No worries. But you can just stop here and see what you've done so far. Is that okay? Okay, okay. So firstly, for pros for should do housework. To help them to. They were were to help them learn and when there to help them. Learn the housework when they are small and when they they are big. They will know how to do it. Nice one. What is there any other ones for this one? Yes, how parents helping parents to do, to do so, parents will not be so tired. 看死哼。Kids will be hiring to do it if it's too much work. We'll be trying to do if it's too much work. Yeah all and have you done should not yet. Yes. Doing. The housework houses are doing the whole houses this housework, the whole house this housework. It's too much if they do. Not not doing the whole house, so doing housework is too much. So not doing all the housework means they won't they will not be as tired, or maybe they could have more time to do what they enjoy. Is that good? Yeah, okay, cool. And last few seconds. To protect themselves, to protect themselves, they a look after themselves. Okay, very well done. It's Abella. Very, very impressed with cons for sure. To do housework, you might just say they they will not develop a sense of responsibility. That could just be an example. Con, so very well done for today's lesson is lesson Isabella, thank you for being so engaging with today's lesson and always trying your best to find out the definitions for words and trying to brainstorm different ideas for the debate. So do you have any questions for me? No. Okay. Well, thank you for this class, Isabella, and I will see you next time. Bye. Is.
