You today? How are you today? What did you do today? What did you do today? What subjects did you have? Chinese, math, English, science. Music. What was your favorite subject, do you think? No favorite no favorite, but they're all equally good or equally bad, equally medium, okay? Yeah, they're just equally okay. Yes. Okay, so Isabella, do memortalks about last lesson. Oh, forgod, it had something to do with food. Healthy food and what what was the motion? What were we saying about healthy food? Do people eat only eat healthy food or only eat done healthy food? Yeah. So what was your perspective on that last lesson? Perspective. So can you write this down perspective? Oops, that's in White font. Sorry. Let me change it to black perspective. Is your view or opinion on something? So can you write that down for me? And I get my no, of course. We got your notes. Yes. Could you write down perspective for me? Yes. I am finished. Okay, well done, Isabella. So, so can you tell me your perspective on the motion? Last lesson about whether children should just eat healthy food? Do you remember? Yes. I think we should eat a lot of healthy food, but. Can't we cannot don't we can we can also eat unhealthy food. So last last time we talked a bit about that, we talked about the different types of pallifood all around the world. And we totally discussed a bit about why people should be able to eat a balanced meal. And this could include having occasionally the occasional junk food, also junk foods and healthy food like chocolate, sweets. But Yeah, so this lesson, our motion or our topic is should kids have cell phones? So I would say a kid would be around five to. Twelve, 13 years even older than that, perhaps like five to perhaps 14 and 15 maybe or a bit younger than that depends on how you see define a kid. So. Let's go through this vocabulary list here of some words we might come into. So what can you pronounce this word for me? Arso it's. For not patent yet. Do you know what that one means? I don't know. So. Patent just means it's unlicensed or I can a certificate to show that you made an invention. Let me make sure it's used in the right context. Yeah. So patent is just a certificate. To. Or one people or many people. So a patent is something that you have a certificate to show that you made a specific type of product or object and no one else can make it or profit from it. So for example, all inventions. So inventions are things that you make. So this can be cell phones. It can be the computer. Or you know, for example, the apple iphone by the apple iphone is different from the Samsung iphone or specific types of lamps or a specific design for a tv. A patent is something that the person who made the product to show that they are the sole owner of that product and no one else can make something similar to that. Does that make sense? So it's a certificate to show ownership over an object so no one else can make money off of it except for them because it's their object that they need. Does that make sense? Yes. Yeah. Okay. Rarely. What does rarely mean. Money. What does really mean? So a lot a lot of it means the opposite to a lot. So really means it almost never happens. Battery. The energy. Yeah, exactly. So energy used to power something. So for example, I'm going to try and show you on my phone. Okay, you see the top? You see this tiny yellow button here? Yes, right? So often at the top right, you have this little number that shows what battery or percentage your phone is on. You had that with your phone. Yeah so that's the battery. That's what's charging your phone. And of obviously, you know when you have to, when your battery runs out, you have to plug it in again and you have to recharge it. So battery is just it could also mean like the battery, sometimes batteries come in little cylinder boxes. So sometimes batteries are physical things as well. It's just something that power wers, something an energy source. Multimedia. Do know what multimedia means? I know this Chinese, but I don't know the English. So let's think of the word. So multiti media, media, there's of any form of expression. It could move pdon TikTok. Yeah, right. So TikTok, it could be physical art, it could be social media. It could be sculpting, it could be a video. So media is any form of expressing something. Multimedia means multiple medias. So it could just, it literally just means multimedia, multiple media just means using absolutely ops, using more than 11. Source to express or communicate. So for example. Video, art, social media. So these are using different types of media or medium to communicate. Does that make sense? Yeah, okay. Rapidly. What does rapidly mean, Isabella? Fast. Yeah, exactly. Really fast. Device. Yeah, exactly. So it's a type of technology. You're exactly right, Isabella. Phone, laptop. Exactly. Well done, advanced. I don't. So advanance is sort of something you use and do something that's really. Really developed, really modern. So really modern or developed storage. I don't know. So storage can mean one of two things. It's still storage is anything where you put something to keep, to store something in there. Storage could be a physical thing. So for example, in like was set in there and you see my door there. Yes. So in my, that's my closet. In my closet that can be a storage because I can store my clothes, my boxes, other things. So that can be a physical storage. However, you can also have storage on your phone, but just how many photos, videos, apps you have? Does that make sense? Yes. Yeah. So again, it can be physical. It can be on your phone storing something somewhere. Internet surfing, have you heard of that before? I no Internet so Internet is it's what allows us to go online. It's what allows us to use social media. It's what allows us to search up something. Internet surfing is where you let me just write this down new look through lots of websites. So Internet surfing is just where you browse through or look through the Internet, what the Internet has to offer. So Google, for example. And then distraction. Is something that. Stop someone. From focusing let me just put it back there, stops on from focusing on something. So for example, if you're doing a test or an exam and all of a sudden I just started screaming, or all of a sudden I just started doing this, right, and you're trying to focus on your exam or I start dancing, that's a distraction, right? So I distract you from doing what you want to do. It can also be used to say that, for example, my biggest distraction when I'm doing my University work is my phone. So phones can also be distractions. I don't know if it's the same for you, but if I'm trying to study artischool or uni and I'm trying to get my work done, and maybe my phone starts getting more notifications and I start texting my friends, or I start going on TikTok, or I start going on Instagram, that's a distraction as well. That makes sense. Yeah, yes. Okay, cool. So I'll give you a second finish writing down all these notes here. I'm finished. Okay, well done, Abella. So you finish writing down all these words and you understand what they mean, right? Yes. Yeah. Okay, cool. So. First, before we start talking about the motion, I'd like to go through the history of the mobile phone. So could you read this first page for me? The pattern or. Or mobile phones issued and 1:19. Eight. America, the patent was for a. Why a. Wireless Wireless ephphone mobile phones themselves begin as to were reduce. Allowing urgency service to communicate with each other while on the road, road when mobile phones begin as phones, they were a big device, far too large and heavy to be carried around. And where an energy, and there will be kind of related anngenerally considered car phones. Yeah. So before we move on so patent we've discussed all that word means issued just means it was made or it was it happened. Wireless telephone. So a wireless telephone. So for example, if you have a phone, right, does it have to be always, always attached to something to be able to use it? No, right? That's what wireless telephone ing. There's no wito often decades ago, there used to be telephones that always had to be plugged in. So you couldn't really walk around with it. You couldn't really do anything except for sit down and call someone on it. Wireless telephone is where you can walk around with it, and it doesn't always have to be plugged in. That's what that means. So they began as a two way radio. So they began as a sort of emergency service to help people communicate on the road. And they were very, very big when they first died. So our phones are quite light, right? They don't weigh too much now, but they're really, really heavy. And they're were often known as car phones because of how heavy they were. Now, can you move on to this page, Isabella? Many years later, Motorola brought out a similar mobile. It was called the迪ina athousand。This is considered the first turn mobile phone, as it was small enough to Carry around due to it high, cause it was not come common, only com们comdy。The. Journal public and was most often. Seen in the business world and. Really? For social use, the phones at the point were. For talking only for a very purple means of communication and no things more so after the big chunky phone, right? That was often a news car, a company called momotorola. But I A smaller mobile phone, right? And this was considered the first tree one because you could Carry it around because it was very small. However, it was very, very expensive, right? It was not often seen in the public so often you and me, we wouldn't have really had it outside. And that's often only in the business world as often only use for business and not social use, whereas phones now are often for social use. And I was generally talking only calls and stuff as opposed to texting. So advancing technology. So it talked about how technology now develops. So could you read this next part for me? Yes, as technology advanced, the phones become similar, and the better ter, life becomes, become greater. This makes more popular with the Journal general journey, general public cell phones concompanies to look. So companies all continued. Company continued to look for ways to pmore features into their phones while making their phones smaller and more affordable. U. Cell phones campaigns are companies, companies saw and Avenue Avenue. Avenue. In new technologies into their phones. It begin with the introduction of. Voice small ell. And then the introduction of eils paper technology and even phone book. Yeah so world Isabella, thank you for reading that. So what this is saying is this first page here, the way that technology got more advanced is as the phone got smaller and lighter and the battery life, so how long it could last without needing to be charged got greater. So we're more popular with the general public. So general public is people in general, in society. So you and me, so cell phone companies, so people who produce cell phones continue to look for more ways to pack more features. So pack more features means to put more features into the phone while making their phones smaller and cheaper. Something company saw an Avenue. So an Avenue. Is a paw. Or a path Avenue is a way to go somewhere. So a path or a sidewalk, do you know whether the word sidewalk or pavement? So these are things that basically, if you think of a path, let me draw it for you. Wait. Okay. So if you think of a road. And there's a I'm Oh, I'm going to be a horrible drawer out the car. And there's a car. I'm not a good artist. That's the window, right? This is the car road. Right, the path or the pavement. Would be what people walk on on the sides. Does that make sense? So that's known as a path or a pavement or sidewalk. So a path is just something that takes you somewhere. So a path could be like a road or a pavement or a sidewalk. So this is the road. Yeah, this is the road and then this is the sidewalk or pavement or people to walk on. Could you write that down to me? Yes. Finish. Okay, well then it's about that. So that's what a path or a pavement or a sidewalk is. A path or an Avenue is just a way to go somewhere. So an Avenue, they saw an opening, so a way to integrate, so to put new technologies into their phones. So for example, they start with voicemail. So voicemail is where youleave a message for someone after they call you. And then they introduce emails for professional work, pager technology, so you can page someone, so you page a page ger, it's just a way to let someone know that you need them. It's often done for work. And and even more phone book storage, even more storage toincluded. So it's getting better and better. Regression of the mobile so can you read here for me? Mobile phones have had a complete shift in their purpose. No longer are they forfor focus on the verbal communication, but they are. No, they are. No. Multimedia. Cool, they are not just for making phones call, but are more useful Internet suring photo of social media and arrange for tools of tools. I'm moving on to this one. Sorry. What are you saying? Sorry without the I'm reading Oh, okay, sorry. With the advancement of technology that no, no, now have enhance the screen. Increasing strange space. Of storage space and have become. Replacement tool for such things and cameras and. Toys. Are rarapidly become a. Solar solution solution for very every need. Yeah. Okay, very well done, Isabella. So first page, they've kind of changed in what they were originally made to do. So originally they were supposed to be for verbal communication, so calling someone. Now they're multimedia, which means they use multiple different types of media, like not just phone calls, but texting, social media, a camera, googling. And so they have many different functions and have many different features besides just calling someone, they have got a screen resolution. So screen resolution. The resolution sorry is how detailed. Something is so it's much more clearer the screens now could you write down resolution for me as it are? I'm finished. Okay. Well done, Isabella. So the that's screen resolution. The screen is more detailed now. There's have more storage space, save more areas to keep stuff on the phone and they also have cameras and calculators and they're becoming a solution. So becoming a way to do everything. Could you read this for me? Mobile phones as. Mentioned beginas large heavy I of a cupink. Over time become smaller, more compact and lighter. However, now with mobile phone becoming mobile device, they are becoming large again, with larger screens and few fewer buttons, a touch screen. Replaced replace is neis the keyboard appeiring and function. So that's pronounced as repairing and vanishing. Repairing handle. Not repairing appearing and vanishing, appearing and vanishing. Yeah ads are client, so sorry. So they became, they were unfortunately very, very big pieces of equipment. They became smaller. But now they're sort of becoming, they're not just phones anymore, they're devices. So the reason why they're called devices now are not really phones, even though people do still refer to them as that is because they're not just for calling or texting people there other things as well. And they've now become a bit larger again with larger screens as last buttons. So for example, there's a touch screen instead of keys, and then sometimes the keyboard appears and vanishes. So sometimes the keyboard comes back or it goes away. So there's different types of mobile phones. Now, does that make sense? Yes. Any questions so far? No. No. Okay. So. Making communication easier. I'm aware that there's a lot of text in the side, but there's a lot of information to get through. So I hope that's okay, but it does give you some more practice for your reading. Making communication easier. Could you read that for me? But on these days have made communication easier than ever before. We have friends and boon on once. Once at our a bingo tips, ask how, as anyone else we may want or not want to contact with for over a small. Moncan. Message, text, email, call are all use and. Array array, array of apps to contact with people to send them Briten, words, pictures or radios. So he's made communication a lot easier, right? Isabella, you could you imagine having to send postcards or letters to people through the mail every time you want to detect them? Right. It's a lot more simpler now than it all you have to do is just pick up your phone, start typing, and it's done right, instantly goes to their phone. So it's made making friends a lot easier. It's made staying in touch with people. So people who might live hours and hours away or might not live in the same country as you, or keeping in touch with your family who are overseas. So for example, my dad lives in Singapore, whereas I live in England. I wouldn't be able to talk to him as much if I didn't have my phone. So I have my phto call him to text him. So it makes keeping in touch with people that you love and care about so much easier. But obviously there is a small monthly fee, so there is a contract for your phone if you want to have Internet and call people in text, but if you want to message, but you also have so many other apps as well. So an array. Means a range of do you know what that means? A ray means range of or numerous. Types of. Oh, multiple types, I'll say multiple times. Do know what that means. Types. So an array of just means a range of or a variety of apps, or multiple types of apps to connect with people, to send them words, pictures, videos. So it makes communicating with people so much easier. Now it's a multi tool as well. So could you read this first part for me? Only can. We use mobile phones to contact with people, but we can also use smart phones to make our day to day lives easier. We can solve马妈。Mathematical mathematical questions we can read books. Play games, create document, take pictures, keep track of our they diary, remind ourselves waare, wake ourselves up, we can even use our smarphones to remind us to drink water or two more. Or to move when we have been too long. Yeah, so for this first part, it's become an essential part of our life. Is it is it like could you imagine your life without your phone? Yeah meaning that it has everything on ethme. It has my friends, it has my family, it has my gait, has my bank account, it has my reminders, it has my schedule. My schedule is very important in my calendar. So I won't know what I'm doing each day. If I didn't have my calendar, I won't know I had this lesson today if it wasn't for my calendar. So it can be very, very useful. So it makes life easier. So it can also solve mathematical equations. It can read books, play games, create documents, take pictures, have a diary, views, reminders to remind ourselves of important things going on, even even our alarm, right? Do you have a clock for an alarm? Or do you have your phone as an alarm? Artist alarm. Alarm is what Yeah alarm is what wakes you up. So it makes you know you have to do something. So for example, if you wake up in here, I like it that it's annoying that it wakes you up. Do you have that on your phone or an in person? My exactly. So you wouldn't be able to wake up ready for school or for other activities if it wasn't for your phone. So your phone is basically everything for everyone, especially in today's age. Could you move on to this part, Isabella? We can use them to stream music and videos and patch up on what is is happening is elsewhere in the world. Even while all shopping, it was found that 84% of shoppers will turn to their smart phones to help them while they were in a store. So where do you find your news from, Isabella? How do you find out what goes on in the world? Big piktok, exactly. Okay. But is that is that on your phone? Yeah. So sorry. So it's all on your phone, right? So where you find out what's happening in the world, where you find out what's going on news events or even like advice, right? Or reminders or advice or music or videos, it's all on your phone. So here are some statistics to know about. So could you read this first part for me? All this technology at R fingertips, helping us with content, constant connection, it is all beneficial. In Australia, there are over 88% of people who only own a smart phone, but the number grows each year over 70. Percent of Australians are. Active on social media and. These cities, these sites. Sites through their mobile phones or publics. Australians who own mobile phone spend on average one hour and two, 20 minutes each month watching videos on their mobile phone. Sorry, moving on to this one. 82% of Australians spend on average 23.3 hours per week online, and 62% of Australians who go online do so by having asasses to three or more device, more or more device to access the Internet. What we was just saying overall is showing, sorry, my voice is going. It's showing how often we use social media, showing you how big of a life it plays with us. So nearly one, so nearly people in Australia, it's 88%. That's a very high number in Australia, owa smartphone and the number just grows each year. And over 75Australians are active on social media. And Australians who own a friends spend an average one hour and 20 minutes each month watching videos on their phone. And 82% of Australians set on average 23.3 hours per week online. That is a lot of hours. That's nearly a full day online. And 62% of Australians who do go online so that they haven't access to three or more devices. So in Australia, and like and most likely so many other places as well, it plays a huge part in their life. So can you read this first part for me? When people wake up each morning, what would be the first thing you would imagine what to do? Take the time, go for a shower. For 11% of Australians, the first thing they do it is immediately tag their mobile phones. 70% people say they check their mobile phones before they get out of bed. One is in one in ten Australians are using their smart phones while they cross. In five, 30 years olds are checking them their smart phones every turn, ten ny minute. When having face to face conversations, conversations with people, it is more more of a growing trend. But when a phone brings or pings, but there is a there, but there is a message, the face to face conversation stops and the ftakes. Priority priority. So what this is showing is that in the first part, oftentimes the first thing that people do when they wake up is check their phone, right? And so they check their phone before they get out of bed. One in ten of Australians use their cell phones when they're crossing roads, which is quite dangerous. One in 5:30 year olds check their smartphone. Sorry. Check their cell phone every ten minutes. And often if we're talking in person, right? So if you're having a conversation with your friend and all of a sudden your phone rings, so is a cool or all of a sudden someone texyou. Often you stop what you're doing with that in person person, even if it's for a second and you look at your phone or the phone takes priority. So takes what priority is. So it takes priority, means becomes more important. Could you write that down for me? I'm finished. Okay. Well, then Isabella, so Yeah, so takes priority. So if a firm takes priority, it means it becomes more important. Do you have any questions so far? No. So noophobia, this is a new word that we're going to learn about. So could you read this first part for me? The relireliof mobile. Phone is beginning being recognized. Or recognized as a problems problem by some people and even has a proposed name. No, Yeah. Nophobia is a condition for the if fear of being without cell phone passes. So what is nemophobia, Isabella? A name name. Or the mobile phone, not our necessarily mobile phone. So what this is saying is that people often rely or use to use mobile phones too much. Nomophobia, zoophobia means fear. Norophobia is the fear of being without your cell phone. 什么?There's a fear of being fair. Of being without your cell phone. Could you write that down for me? Yes. Okay, well done. So could you read this next part for me? Are selling to be more. On their own ones is, but for irwas reasons. While they are younger, they may use them for so so. As. As well as their work lives, as they grow and get a family, they use many be due to being connect. They do connect to their family or making task easier. The same smart home is a central, central point for contact and service. It is a multipurpose pose. I is. Equipment. Do you do you do we use too much trust that we use to. Or pose? Yeah. So do you think you have nemophobia Isabella? Do you think you have a fear of being without your cell phone? Yes, Yeah. So for example, if I lose my cell phone, which is often because I'm very forgetful, so if I lose my cell phone or maybe it falls off somewhere, I become very panicked. So so people are becoming more reliant on their cell phone, but it's for many different reasons. So for me, the main reason I am reliant on my cell phone is it's because it has my calendar and all my or my work on it. It has my two Toron. It it has my uni work on it. That's the main reason I'm so reliant on it is because it's part of my work life. Other people use it more for social reasons. Other use it to make tasks easier. So it's a multimedia, but it's a multipurpose equipment but do think we use it too much. Yes. Yeah. So. I'm going to try and get this. Here we go. Is it? Here we go. Okay, so for this worksheet, actually before we do this worksheet, I want to show you a video about people debating about cell phone use. Before we do that worksheet, I'd like you to watch this video. Let me just share it. All. Sure yet. Okay. We begin this hour with a look at how social media and cell phones can affect children. It's part of our coverage of mental health Awareness Month. A recent survey showed 43% of kids between ages eight and twelve have smartphones. That number source ced to 88% for kids between 13 and 18. And on average, those teens spend nearly 15 hours per day on social media sites. We wanted to have an honest conversation with a group of kids about everything from the pressure of owning a phone to expectations created by social media. We spoke to Sam, Nellie, tiara, eraron and jade. All have cell phones except for name. He's only eight years old, and all are on at least one social media platform. Did you feel pressure to need a cell phone because other people had it? Yeah, for sure. It was one of those things where all of my friends had them, so I kept asking and asking. I did feel pressured because in fifth grade, literally every single one of my classmates had a phone. At that time, I definitely was pressured. It was like a competition to see who would get a phone first. When I was in fifth grade, have you ever felt separation anxiety when you didn't have your phone in your hand or you didn't have access to it? In the past few years, it was like when I would get my phone taken, I'd be like, Oh, I mismy phone. What am I gonna to do now? Felt like I couldn't live without it. I've definitely felt that like I know my friends have like taken my phone. I was younger and I would always get a little nervous about like, where's my phone? And that was the only thing on my mind when they took it. Like I feel that I'm missing like quote unquote, a part of me. I think I realize how impatient I've gotten when I don't have it and I can't fill up the time with games or social media or things like that and you're just like, Oh, just stand and look around. Pretty bored right now. Okay, nanow, you don't have a phone, but you have access to an iPad. Yeah. Games with angswitch. When you don't have those things and you don't have access, how do you feel? I also missing a part of me, like Eric said, the main way you guys hang out, quote unquote, with your friends outside of school, social media outside of school, with me and my friends, we do a lot of like voice calls a lot, and we play games. So we like do study calls and probably do that for a good amount of time. Maybe I think this weekend we probably spent like 15 hours on call over the course of the weekend. Okay. All right. Nahave you been playing video games or got lost on YouTube and just been watching video after video after video? I came just hours. The only thing I would say, wanto watch if no one tells me now you can't watch that, right? Youtuyoutube YouTube tiwhat about you. I would say if I'm on TikTok, two to three hours. Two to three hours straight shot on TikTok. Yeah. Just sitting there scrolling. Yeah. What's so interesting about tiktojust seeing like different people just make funny videos? It's like and the fact that I can relate to the videos, it just makes me want to watch more and more and more. You're on YouTube or TikTok, SnapChat, discord. But I feel like there could be a darker side to that. Am I right by saying that definitely that comparison thing that you do when you're scrolling and you see all these different people, you constantly compare yourself, and I think that's definitely a negative. And it always seems like they're living the perfect life that you are not, even though that's not no, I agree with what Ellie said. Like it acts like they have a perfect liand. They're perfect. They can do whatever they want. They have all that money compared to them. I'm a nobody. I like art a lot. I draw in my free time, and I write in my free time, and then I see like all these content creators making like these gous gorgeous pieces of art digitally. And they're like younger than me. They could be like twelve when they already mastered the use of like lighting and shading. And I'm looking at this and I'm like, holy crap. Like, why am I doing this where there's so many other people that are like so much younger than me and have so much more potential than me? Basically social media as everyone's persona, and it's not actually like how they are, but it's rather how they present themselves. So it's like hard for someone who sees that like realize that that's maybe not their life isn't as good as it seems. Yeah. Now let me ask you something. When you were on YouTube during certain things that were happening in this country, did you see certain things that impacted you? Yes. I'm like, why are you police doing? Like they wilhe's talking about police and brutality. Yeah. What was it like when you saw stuff like that saulike that I'm thinking that we're not even out of slavery anymore. Like we're back where we were when times starting, you're eight years old and you were thinking that, yes, I was concerned for myself because I'm black and these people are like, disspending ding us are my kind. And like, I'm not I'm not feeling good about that. My final question is, social media is a great platform for some people, but a bad platform for others. Tir, social media is what you make it. It depends on which you allow yourself to see who you follow, who you don't follow. What's on your explore page is just what you make it. Elit's going to say social media is its own world. It definitely is. And my advice to them afterwards, don't get lost in that world, exist in this real world and tap into people that can speak, encouragement and give you light in the right energy. Because sometimes being on social media and getting lost in it can be depleting to these Young kids. They seem to understand that though, that I was impressed with because he's eight. But all the age ranges were saying, what you see sometimes is not reality. They at least seem to be aware of that. Were they? They are savvy. They were they were savvy as aware. I also explained to them that as adults, we struggled with the same thing. We watch a commercial and we're sitting here looking at some guy with a fancy car and a ton of money. We immediately say, I want to buy this product because I see this guy doing that. And women do the same thing. That's how they market to us. So I just love the fact that they are realizing this and having this hyper awareness at engayeah. I would wonder if they think they're getting more out of social media, or social media is getting more out of them, and if they could wish it away, you know would they rather live in a world without it? Yeah. Or do they prefer it this way? It's really good. I know my vote is world without it, world without it, but I'm a fogy now. Welcome to your forties, Nate. So you think what did you think of that video? A. I think I'm the same with. With with the phone Yeah so you feel dependent on it. Yes. Yeah. Dependent is one people or many people. Dependent is when you rely on something. So I'm dependent on my phone because I need it in my life for work, for social reasons. Whatever the reason, I rely on it. That's what be dependent on something means. So are you dependent on your phone, Isabella? You will depdent on my phone. Are you depending on your phone? Yes. Yes. Okay. So in the next maybe five ish minutes, could you write down in one note, it's based on this worksheet reasons people use their mobile phones based on business categories, personal categories and miscellaneous. So miscellaneous just means random for different reasons, either business reasons, personal reasons, or random reasons why people might use their phones. Does that make sense? Yeah. So could you brainstorm different reasons for each? Business for study work person is myself a reason. So yourself, your mind, your socialized and then miscellaneous is just random reasons that you think of. Yeah, okay, cool. So I'll give you around five minutes to do that. And then we. Okay, well done. It's well. A so what did you refor each? Over many people you to pack the bus. Or the people that they work together, colleagues, colleagues, Oh God, this of checking their work. And when sometimes the boss want to have a meeting, they might use mobile phones to the how the people work for him or he. Person. I can use my phone to research information. And taxing friends. Thanks, friends. Yeah, parents. I'm watching, playing. Or taking king homework on. Phand checking what class. Do I have the next day? Random. Some people work on their phones. Oh, powerful. Phones can also help peopto take pictures or videos. To to buy to shop on phones online shopping. And online buying food. Niversary shopping. That's all. Okay, very, very well done Isabella. I'm very proud of what you've written here. You wrote a lot of different types of things to do on your phone, lots of detail, lots of different ranges of things to do on your phone. So very, very well done. So in the last few minutes I'm gonna to show you another video and then we can end the lesson there. But it's just something else to think about with cell phones. Is that okay? Okay. Can I just share my screen? Where is it? Okay, you saw what can happen when these little screens on 2020, you saw what can happen when these little screens take over our lives. One of the doctors featured in that, reporters from metro Detroit, he's studying how tablets and cell phones affect your child's brain. Look what happens in a healthy child compared to someone with Internet addiction. Gone. The brain just shuts down. Brain shuts down. So an action News Reporter, Kim Russell, takes us behind the scenes of an experiment all parents need to see. We Carry our cell phones everywhere, and they are an easy distraction, not only for adults, but for children. But is it dangerous right now? Researchers at children's hospital and Wayne State are looking into that. Nice to meet you. Our executive producer, Jody Heisner, and her husband, Jeff, wanted to find out how tablet use impacts their children, Ella and Jackson. Once Ella and Jackson learned theyget to play on a tablet for an experiment they were in I love video games, he would almost rather plan his tablet than do just about anything. Psychiatrist Dr. David Rosenberg and psychologist Dr. Pria Tarmina hooked them up to censors. But will it do when people react to stuff? Our sweat glands actually do stuff. And even if it's just a tiny bit, you don't have to be dripping with sweat. But even just a tiny little change, the sensor can pick up. The sensors measure how stimulated they are doing different tasks. Now you get to play it. They found two things. The sensor showed the tablet is much more stimulating than other activities. And this curve up here is what you see. When she was actually playing a game that she enjoyed on an iPad, and the children's mood changed. Ala, for example, went from exhausted to happy. The first two times I was just kind of tired. And then after I played the game, the video game, it just kind of went away. Games like this actually stimulate the reward center of your brain. Their parents say Jackson gets upset and grumpy when tablet time is done. So it causes a release of neurotransmitters that actually do make you feel better. They make you feel good. They make you feel awake. But much of their parents relief. Ella and Jackson are not addicted to technology. Their parents limit tablet time. We do give them the tablets on the weekends, but you know it's no more than a little bit here and a little bit there. But in children that are addicted, researchers warn, the way the brain works completely changes. But look what happens in a healthy child compared to someone with Internet addiction gone, the brain just shuts down. Brain shuts down. And its executive functioning is not working. To Dr. Rosenberg, it looks familiar. It looks like a brain addicted to drugs. When you look at an mri of a brain using heroin, and you look at an mri of a brain that's hooked on tablets, what's the difference? Overall, the disruption in the brain network is pretty similar. Even if you think your children are addicted to technology, here's the good news. It's reversible. Take a look at this. This is the brain of a healthy person who is not addicted to the Internet. Compare that to this. A picture of someone who is addicted, there is a lot less brain activity. But if that person goes on a digital fast, take a look, the brain heals. Some of the people who are making the games are designing them deliberately to hook hook us on them and to get us addicted and not want na do anything else. So how do you protect your children? It's all about getting help if you need it and having. Everything. Okay. So what did you think of that video? 嗯。The girl, the little girl. They. Put things on their hands and and when the girl with games. She feel happy and before playing games are she feel like a normal的poor man。Yeah so it has positive and negative, better positive and negative effects, right? Can make you happy, but it can also make you addicted, which is bad for your brain. So thank you for being so engaging this lesson and developed la. I know it's a bit of a long lesson today. I hope you learned a lot and I will see you for our next lesson. Bye.
