Hi, Andy. I'm doing my math homework. Okay, okay, I. Will earn my ear. No know. Where is everybody? Send message? Hi, William. I can see that you're in here, but I can't see your camera. Is. Your camera working, William. All right, I'll give them one more minute and then we'll just get started, Andy, because I'm not sure what's going on today. Why is the picture of Harry Potter? Because we're going to be exploring some fictional character descriptions and what are those is going to be through Harry Potter. Okay, but once the note saying, I mean if we shes past the note 25 saying poter a slave pd warna scholy it says, here's the dress on it. It says, Mr. H Potter, the cupboard under the stairs for privdrive little winging Surrey. Okay, so that's that's his address. I'm just not good. So I said that again. I mean, what's sorry, I mean, not name ed. Oh, Surrey is a place in England. Show you look, I hear the places boring. I mean, there's some amazing things. There's a place in America called boring. Is that that's a good place to live? I wonder if it is boring or not. Look, this, no idea. This is sorry. Okay, so that's where Harry was living. So I live I live like here, I think close the English Channel. Yeah, it's in the south southern part of England. Yeah, near to London. London is here. That's London. So very close to London. Oh, there you go, William. It's working now. Hi, William. How are you? Okay, we're just going to get going. So today we are looking, it's the last of these lessons, isn't it? And we're looking at writing a fictional character description. So our learning focus today will be to learn how to write an accurate and detailed description of a fictional character. So we're going to look at an introduction to a character description, practice describing a character's appearance and traits using interesting and advanced adjectives and some paragraph writing practice. So first question, what is a character? Well, characters are obviously from a story, and it says they can be people, animals, creatures. You know, they don't just have to be people. Like these are millions, which are obviously not animals or people. They're aliens, but they could just be animals that can walk and talk as well. They could be monsters and dragons and mermaids and anything really mythical creatures, whatever, could be a plant. It could also be something like something that non fically do. I mean, I do watch minions, but where they come from, well, they're aliens. That's about as much as I know. Don't forget, Andy, because there's still two of us in the lesson. Can you try and raise your hand before we speak just so that we don't all talk over each other? The main characters are who the story is about. That's what we call the protagonist is like the person or you know, the character that we're following through the story. And every story needs to have characters, otherwise there would be no one to follow you. It wouldn't be very interesting. So who is your favorite story character? Andy? Who's your favorite story character? My third story character is. It's the dude worm. Oh, the one from dune. So you mean the big sandworm? Yeah so why is that your favorite character? Because it's like appearing out of nowhere. Yeah, quite mysterious, aren't they as well? So is that from the movies or from the books? From the movie. Yeah. So what about in a book that you've read, Andy, what's your favorite character? I have a shop and. I don't have any fiction books. I have my weird and uli don't have anything. Ficokay, well, that's fine. Fair enough. What about you, William? Have you got any favorite characters from movies or books, comic books, whatever? Tv series? You don't have any favorite character, which I'm remember. Membering, my favorite. William. Andy. Andy. William. I'm speaking to William right now. There's no point putting your hand up if you're then just going to speak. The point of putting your hand up is waiting until I say your name to speak, isn't it? So please can we try and just hold on? So William, what about video games? Like what do you do? You read any books or watch any movies or play games in your spare time? Yeah, so what kind of things? You don't know. So what's the last film? What's the last movie that you watched? William, let's forgot. Okay, well, you're going to have to try and think of one, William, because at the end of this, towards the end of this lesson, you're going to be writing a description of a character. So you're gonna to have to, throughout the class, have a little think about who you're going to write about. If you can't think of any characters, you know you're going to find that quite difficult. So you need to try and have a little think, even if it's someone who isn't your favlike, Spiderman or Harry Potter or something like that, just one that you recognize. Okay. Yes, Andy. Where some kids find that an alien has landed in the ahara desert, and they find that there are two aliens shaped like 70 to us. They're blue. And the father is a very angry fellow, and he and they help his son fulfill a quest. Then the father meeats the son, and they manage to get the energy cube out of the spaceship so they can fly. And then they. I mean, I mean, it's sort of like a tragedy story because I remember in the last page they all died. Oh goodness, that sounds very dramatic, doesn't it? So who's your favorite character then from that story? I remember the father turning into a humanous orange thing with tentacles, flippers, claws, and about a brilliant eyes and claws sharpiece, Oh my goodness. Is scyeah crazy? Okay, character type. So when an author writes a story, they need to decide what types of characters the story will have. So usually you're going to have good characters and bad characters. And the purpose of those characters is to drive the plot. So it means to push the story onwards. You know, if all the characters were good and everyone was happy, there wouldn't be much story with there. We need a bad character usually to create problems and things for the good character to solve. That's what creates the story plot, you know, and those character traits help to create the blocked. Andy, do you want to read what's on this slide for me? Okay, a protagonist is normthe main character in the story. This character is also portrayed in a positive flight. So the reader rotes the of the story, an anthropologist is a person or ruberfuel who actively work against the protagonist, like Harry Potter and barexactly. This is this, what is antagonist? Antagonist. Okay. So when we're describing a character from a story, it is useful to include the following things. William, could you read this list for us? Characters in production, name, age, location, background, description of their appearance, hair color, size, clothing, disgusting features. Oh no, it's distinguishing. The diquishing tricky word, isn't it? Distinguishing distinguishing features, description of their personality traits. So you know it's really important that we know these things about your character. Why do you think it's important that we know things like you know not just their name, but how old they are and where they're from and you know what they like to wear and what their personality is like. Why is it important that we know these things about a character in a story? Any ideas? Why would we need to know these things? Andy. Because it makes us know what we looking at. I mean, you can just look at someone's shadow. Yes, good point. Important to have a description so we can imagine that character. Yeah, what they look like. Good. What but what about like not just what they look like, the other things about them, you know, where they grew up and how old they are. Why is that important? I would show some parts of the story, right? I mean, if you don't character tree and say the lady is Liping, what will we think? She's 30, 50. Yeah, we'll just Yeah good. Yeah. We might end up guessing. And then you know, we could be deciding something different to what the author wanted us to describe because they didn't tell us. But also think about, you know, when you meet people in your life, you know, you find out what their name is and how old they are and where they're from and what their personality is like and what they like and what they don't like and what clothes they wear and their hair coland, how tall they are, how short they are. You find out those things from when you meet people, don't you? And you know, if you were to just find out about what someone's name is and that they've got blonde hair, then you might you know you wouldn't be very interested in that person or you wouldn't know enough about them to be friends with them or something, would you? And it's like that in a story. We need to know all of these things to make them feel like a real person or you know a real character that we can get to know. Yeah. If we don't know, these things are very quickly going to get bored of them. So today we're going to practice writing a character description, and we're going to use the character Harry Potter. What do we already know about Harry Potter? What do we know about him, Andy? You will not buy his uncle, uncle Verman, and he has a scarlarship like a lightning Boand. He was a Horcrux by Voldemort. Yeah serii read the whole hair flower series. I mean, a whole process is like when I, when Harry Potter books the locker, the locker with volume, I mean, in a horcaryou can simply like cut small apart and put half of the someone in a jar, and then you'll just disve the jar walalls. I mean, the jar is now part of volthe world. I have another book here where someone found he could get into a building. Hey, good. Let's try to focus on Harry Potter as a character and not on the story or the story plot. We're not describing a plot. We're describing Harry Potter. Yeah. So let's try and stay focused on that. That's good. He grew up with his aunt and Uncle William. Do you know much about Harry Potter? 呃呃呃呃。What do we know about, you know, he's flying on this broom. So he's a, there's a word that begins with W A wizard. Yeah, good. So he's a wizard. He can do magic. What school does he go to? Hohogwarts for Yeah good William and eve ve you got anything else to add? He plays quiit very well and not be any more information. He found that the snitchy carhad three magical items inside. Mm, okay. Is that about Harry Potter's character, or is that about the plot of the story? Harry Potter, well, harpoter's, good. Accorage is an opinion, yes. But no. But I mean, him finding those things inside the snitch, that's part of the story, isn't it? So let's always bring it back. We're describing Harry. We're not just we're not just telling what happens in the Harry Potter story books, okay? We need to stay focused on that. So we know things like he's a wizard, he's good at doing magic and he goes to Hogwarts. You know there's some some very you know small amount of key facts about him. So they have a small task here. Let me just have a look. I can't see anything. So remember. Name, age, location. So your task is to write a three sentence introduction about Harry Potter. Remember, an introduction is their name, their age, their location and their background. At. Mine. Yours. Phone. And. She lies. It was once it was born. On. She was born. Must place place away. Bye. His uncle. She's uncle. We. Not. Allow. How these. Cat. 他。In the. House. And. Uncle. Did not. I you separate from that period. Okay, you finished Andy, just let me know when you finish this. I see, just just check your family. I have one. Okay? D that. Okay, watch out. We finished Andy. Okay, so just click erso. Harry has got two R's in it so I'll add that in for you. Okay, that's good. He is nine years old with raised y's boy's uncle and his uncle did not allow Harry pet, did not allow Harry to have a pet owl in the house. He defeated the evil wizard. Okay. So all I'd say Andy about that, I think that's good. He's raised by both his aunt and his uncle, but you know, that's small details. Would you say that he defeated the evil wizard? Do you think that isn't depends, I guess how we're describing that? Is that an introduction about him in terms of where he's from and his background? Maybe when he's older it could be depends on we're looking at the part of the story, I guess, isn't it? You know, I guess if we were to if when he was an adult, youprobably include that in his background, wouldn't you? But as a child, if that hasn't happened yet, then we couldn't really say that depends where it's going. So an introduction is mainly about name, age, location, background that I put up there. Yeah. So you might want to talk about, you know, his parents were killed by Voldemort, right? You know, instead, or so then he became an orphan or Hudden. I didn't know how to spell bothe well, or you could say the evil wizard. I'm I'm not I'm not talking about the fact you haven't named Voldemort. I'm talking about the fact of what is somebody's background. And it depends you know when we're talking about this. So you know you could also talk about the fact that he goes to Hogwarts. Yeah that would be a key part of his background. I'm just suggesting other things that you could you could have added. Yeah, but it's okay. It's good. We've got the information that we need there. Okay, right. So Williams got Harry Potter. Not sure his name. That's okay. Hogwarts and his uncle's house. So Hogwarts is actually spelt like that. William. Yeah and his uncle's house. William, you can stop there for me. That's good. So he so there you go Andy. That's what so with yours you've said he's nine years old. So has he defeated the evil wizard when he's nine years old, as you say he is? He depicated him when he was about eleven years old. So so really, could that be his background? But depenon, how you look at it, you said, Haris destiny, then it will be that. But did I say that? I said, in the description, I said name, age, location and background. So I would just think about that last part about the fact that he defeats the you know Voldemort, is that part of his background? Maybe we could talk more about his parents or the school or something something like that. Yeah. So I think he ends up defeating Voldemort towards the end of school. I think he's about 17 actually. So it happens much, much later than nine years old. Okay, right, but never mind, that's just the sedantics of the story, okay? So as we move on to understand characters in more depth, we want to think about them on the outside as well as on the inside. So when we think about them on the outside, what kind of things will that involve? What features? If we think about the character on the outside, what would we be describing? So we would be describing the physical things about him. So the things that we can see Yeah the outside of somebody is the things that we can see Yeah. So. What can we see? About Harry Potter. I'll get it started. He has Brown hair. What else can we see? Thank you, Andy, for putting your. Hand up and glasses, blue eyes and glasses. Good, William, what else can you see about Harry Potter? What can you see, William, what can you see on the picture? What can you tell me about him? They they hear the the score and Yeah, so Yeah, he's got a scar on his, a lightning bolt scar on his head. Good. What about what kind of clothes is he wearing in this picture? How do we describe these clothes? Andy, he's. Wearing a cloak and a jacket. Well, the cloak would be the jacket. Okay, Yeah a cloak is the kind of jacket he hasn't got a cloak on and a jacket it's one or the other really black cloak. And he's kind of wearing like a gray jumper, isn't he? Underneath this gry jumper and then the cloak on top like that. Okay. So that's basically, you know what we can see. He is wearing what he looks like. Maybe you could also say a White shirt, you know pretty basic. Anything that we missed? Yeah his pants, red and gold tie, whatever, just show that he's Gryffindor. But we also would want to think about him on the inside. That's his personality traits. Yeah not just what he looks like on the outside, but what he is like on the inside, his personality. So what can we say about Harry's personality? He's not going to be lined up perfectly. He's brave and strong, and he is very not emotionally unstable. So he's emotionally stable, unstable. So he said he's did you say he's not emotionally stable or he's not emotionally unstable? He's not unstable. Okay. So he's emotionally stable then. Okay, so brave, strong, emotionally stable. William, would you anything add anything to describe Harry? Nope. Nothing you could think to add no adjectives to describe Harry. Apart from these three, I think there definitely is some I don't know, not sure what about. He has you know friends who he cares about. So how could we describe him knowing that he has two friends that he cares for and he looks after? What adjective could we use to describe someone who cares about their friends? I could think of one that starts with k. Kind. Kind Yeah he's kind. He's a kind friend, isn't he? You know he really cares about them and wants to protect them. Yeah, we could also maybe say he's honest, you know tells the truth, doesn't he in situations, Andy? If his uncle were listening right now, he probably contradicted, but he's good because I mean, he always gives everyone his stuff and is very ambitious. One, the time he and Ron tried to climb the staircase to the girldormitory. Yeah, ambitious. Good. So you can see now that we have descriptions describing him on the outside and on the inside, and it's really important that we have those in a character description. It's not just about what someone looks like. It's about you know their personality will affect the decisions that they make, which will affect the story. So it's really important that we know those too. We've already kind of done this together, so don't. So you know, for example, appearance adjectives might be like, this is not describing Harry. This is just some examples, like handsome, strange, unsightly, you know, filthy, hairy, slender, untidy, ugly, round, frail. There's lots of different adjectives you can use to describe someone's appearance. Obviously, I'd say these are mainly male. Female adjectives would be quite different. Entially, Andy, you're still shouting out at me. If you want to want to say something, can you put your hand up? No. So character traits are valued aspects of a person's behavior. Everyone has character traits, both good and bad, including our favorite fictional character. So even Harry Potter, he's not perfect. You know, there's lots of things about him which make him, you know not perfect, and that's what makes him an interesting character. You know often in younger children's stories, maybe the good character is only good and perfect, but as you you know start to write more interesting and mature stories, youwant your character to be more interesting too. And that often involves them getting things wrong and making mistakes and you know, not being perfect, because that's just like everybody, nobody's perfect, are they? And we've done that as well. We've described his personality, haven't we? So Yeah. So instead of saying good, like we said, maybe kind and courageous, more explaining why we think he's good rather than just saying good. You know like we wouldn't really describe Voldemort as just bad, would we? We would explain why he's bad using adjectives to describe that rather than just saying those boring words. So here's the more examples of some character traits if I just pick out a few, like respectful, friendly, confident, talented, funny, intelligent, calm, polite, honest, shy, focused, trustworthy, brave, humorous, sensitive, thoughtless, rude, grouchy, dishonest, weak. You know, there's lots of positive adjectives, but there are some negative adjectives here as well. So what you're going to have a go at. So we've still we've got about just under 20 minutes to the end of this lesson. So I'm going to give you plenty of time to have a go at writing a character description of your favorite character from a book or a movie. You need to think about you know, their name, their age, their appearance and their personality. I'm gonna to show you an example that isn't an example on here, but I'm going to get an example to show you because I want to make sure that you're you know happy with what you need to be doing. So we put this on a text board. Right, you can get started for me, and I'll find an example to show you. You can start thinking about your ideas. He. Comes. 睡觉了。Let you both know who you're going to be writing about. I've got an example which I'll just show you. Hang on to stop what you're doing. Here's a really short example. Character description Spiderman is a Young superhero who wears a bright red and blue suit covered in web patterns. He is small and speedy, and his mask has large White eyes that help him spot danger. Even though he is brave and strong, Spiderman is also kind and helpful, always using his powers to protect people and do the right thing. So there isn't things that in there like his ae and where he comes from, but we have got not only what he looks like, you know Young, bright red and blue suit, webhappened pping small, but you know mask large with White eyes. We've also got his personality. Yeah so and things about him, speedy, brave, strong, kind, helpful, wants to protect people and do the right thing. So we've got a mixture there and that's only a few sentences. Yeah we can get a lot of description in just a few sentences. I got ten minutes. I can't write. Oh, Oh, there you go. I can't see you. Okay, William. So William, remember, it doesn't have to be Harry Potter can be anybody. You can even make them up if you want to. If you're really struggling to think of someone, make someone up. I don't care. Just so as long as we're writing something. He came to and was on to steal natural gas. Earth. Natural. Natural gas, natural. William, William, just make somebody up. Make somebody up. Okay, come on. We need to write something. We've had six minutes and you've not written anything yet. Just make a character up who you know and tell me a little bit about them. Pain. Contained. Magical. Hallo. His name. He's a very bad. He's of red caps. One, William, look, I can show you an example. His name is John, and he is a kind, friendly boy. Who? Whereas pink jumpers and Brown shoes. Look, there's a sentence that I've written in 10s describing someone's personality and what they look like. That's all I need from you, William, just to show me that you can write a sentence using adjectives to describe what someone looks like and what their personality is like. Come on, you have a go. We've got five minutes now. Children on earth. Look together, I'm try to stop him. What does say his character? No, no, delete delete. Ambi然。在。May you finish Sunday. No no no. Okay. They give just like 20s to finish up what you're writing, so I can have a little look. Can you help me here? I. Don't know how to get it because I was supposed to write. He has a million teeth and 2 million eyes. He has a million teeth. And 2 million eyes. Okay, so his name is Rex. He comes from etinaug. He has a million teeth and 2 million eyes. He is a very bad creature. He's very greedy. He ate his son. Oh goodness, he came to earth to steal natural gas. His spaceship contained a magical pube. Okay, good. So we've got both what he looks like, but also, you know, some personage traits about him. I would say just try not to say very bad. Continue more about these things like greedy and stealing things and whatever. Very bad. We can do better description than that, can't we? You know, I prefer greedy to bad, but good. It's a good start. Well done, Andy. Hey, William, what have we got? We've got Jason, friendly and kind, who wears a White jumber and black. And and black shoes rather than shoe, otherwise that's just one would be a little strange to wear just one shoe, but maybe he does. Okay, thank you. Right. Well done. I know it's quite difficult to get used to writing on the keyboard and writing on here, so well done for having a go at that. So it's been nice to do these lessons with you over the last four weeks. Maybe I will see you again soon. Hope you enjoy the rest of your weekends. Thank you very much, boys. Well done. Bye.
