Hi, Serena. Hi. Sorry. I just I was in the loo just second, but I can get out. Don't worry. How are you doing hayour day? Yeah, it's been all right. Have you done anything fun? It's like normal day at home, like I just I'm going back to school today though. Oh, nice. Oh Yeah. Sorry, no. That Sunday afternoon before like a tough week start is the worst. So I Yeah. But could be better than you think. Also, it's kind of like nearly Christmas. Yeah kinda like we have like we have that less than a month, but it's still like quite and it will go quickly. And also, I feel like the countdown to Christmas is kind of exciting at school because you have like Carol concerts and Christmas dinner, all that type of stuff. Yeah, that might be better than anything. Maybe what's a geography teacher like? Do you like them? Maybe okay, okay, she's all right. She's not like very, very good, but she's not bad. Okay, right. So let's start off the lesson with a little refresher of the world map. Okay, so from left, from east to west, I guess your east is going to be different to my okay, let's start from North America and work your way across the map naming the different continents. I've given you the first one. So that's South America. They were pointing at yenear South America. Keep going and then that' S Africa. And then that's Europe. Yeah, nice. Okay. And then that is Asia and Timor. This area. That' S Africa. No. Yeah, that is Africa. It's ocean year. Yeah and the final one. Final ones, Antarctica. Nice. And what about the different oceans? The Indian Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, the atthe Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, the Arctic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, did I say that you already said it? The Southern Ocean, yes, well done. That's the tricky one. Okay. And quickly just a little Walmart. Can you name me three countries in each continent? Okay. So in North America, this us. Panada and Mexico kinda I of Mexico Mexico is good. South America and then. Let me think. And then in South America, there's Cuba, Brazil and Chile. And then we'll ask I would just okay. And in. In Africa, they're South Africa, South Africa, Nigeria and Egypt. Great. Well done. Okay, quick, let's do Europe. The uk, France, Spain and Italy, Oh, I said for out, okay, uk, Spain, frsecond, China, South America, South Korea and Japan. Okay. And can you name three countries in Oceana as hard, but you could get there. I think you know them. Does Philippines count? No. Good. Quite very good question. Philippines is here, but it's technically in Asia. Okay. New New Zealand, Australia, great. There's a lot of things that like are between like, do you know what this comes of Asia? No, if you if you tell me, I might recognize it, though. It's called paa New Guinea. No, I have no idea. Paa New Guinea is in technically in Oceana. And Oh, it's it's one of the countries that has lots of tribal communities that are disconnected from the rest of the world. So sometimes you see on YouTube videos or you'll learn case studies about tribes that are like completely removed from the rest of the world in society. Many of them can be found in Papua New Guinea. It's a super interesting place. It's also one of the only countries where cannibalism is legal. Come back. Yeah, sorry, I just didn't realize. No, no. Cool, cool. We're learning new stuff. So let's move on to os maps. So what do you think are the advantages of using an os map? Why do we need them in geography so that people can like know where they are and find out they need to be? Yeah. So I guess you could say that for lots of maps, but why do you think os maps specifically are useful? It's just like it has like its own symbols, which like and then maybe like. Maybe helps people to understand it. It also is like I sure it also is like kind of beneficial to like especially people from the uk. Yeah, definitely. I think what you're the point about symbols, what you're getting at is that os maps offer us a higher level of detail compared to just a map. This doesn't really show us anything about areas or even this one like it gives us names in rivers, but it's not showing us a level of detail that we need to help navigate a place. So I think the main advantage of os maps is the level of detail that can relate both to the human aspect of the place, so for example, where the shops are, where the church ches, where the roads are located, but also to show us the physical geography aspect. So we have things like contour lines, spot height. We use the distance scale to show us the word. I'm going to uses topographically what the landscape looks like. Topography is a good word. I'm going to write it down topography. It describes the sheep of the land shape, dphysical attributes of the land. So it's a good word to know so it can show us the level of detail in both the human features and physical features of a place. But reading them can sometimes be quite tricky, because you have so much detail, and it can sometimes be difficult to. Work through them. So Yeah, I've just written here, normally they're very, they can also show a very large area in a small map and you can use the measuring indices to break it down, which is important. Shows contours, symbols, footpass, roads, rivers, settlements, etcetera. So both human and physical and very useful for measuring distances and enfying features. But schools are obsessed with os maps because they're fundamental to learning like maskills, which is, I think what you wanted to cover. I'm not going to talk about that today. Okay. Do you know how to draw a compass star? Yeah, okay. Do you want to quickly draw one and I'll see how much detail you draw it in. Okay, can you draw on the screen? Can I? No, I can't. Okay. Like you can't because you don't have a pen or you can't because you're like I'm not. I can't because it's enabled. Oh, okay, okay. Let me try and enable it. If not, then you can just do it on. Okay. I should have just allowed you to draw. Did that work? Not really. I don't. No worries. Just draw it on a pen and paper and then hold it up to me when you're done. Doesn't matter if no pressure, we're going to learn about it afterwards. It's a bit messy, but like I think it's so legible. What do I need to do, like north north northwest or like North West? As much detail as you know. Like I tried to do them like with like different lengths, but it kind of didn't work because it was because I'm drawing on one note. Doesn't matter, doesn't need to be neat. And then okay, cool, just hold it up to me to the camera. Oh, and just close. Pikers is like mirrored, so it might be the wrong direction. I'm not sure. Yeah, no, no. Yeah, it's good. I can't really see it, but how does it compare to this? This is what it should look like. It's the same, but I did lininstead of these. Like doesn't errow it doesn't that doesn't matter as long as you've got the right letters in the right order and make sure Yeah these two aren't confused. So it's a north northeast, northeast, east northeast and except that these are all the same. Okay, amazing. Well done. Yeah this is really important. It's the step before you start map skills is just being able to confidently give compass directions. And especially in your writing, when you start describing how to get from point a to point b, you need to be really confident in your compass skills. So that's great that you knew that. Well done. We talked about longitude and latitude yesterday. What's the difference between the two? No. Longitude is the imaginary line that goes like vertically, and latitude is lines that goes horizontally. And what's the line of longitude at zero degrees? Sorry, what's the line of longitude that lies at zero degrees? Was it like some like prime meridian, good memory, prime meridian. And you can find it where where's the primeridian located? In in London, right in Gratical. And what have that design of latitude that that runs at zero degrees? Latitude, equator equator. And do you remember what the other important lines of latitude are? Therefore. The other Oh Yeah the the tropic of cancer, the tropic of no, it was the line of no, it was something of cancer, something of you're right. No, then you got it right. Probably big of cancer. And the other one, what was the other one again? Tropic of Capricorn. Oh Yeah, trotrocal Capricorn. And then the other two. The other two. And you can give me one. If I give you one, then you'll very easily get the other. But one of them is the Arctic Circle, the Antarctic Circle. Nice. Well done. Yeah. I was like, I kind of forgot like a little. I was like, no, great. It's okay. That's why we're recapping. Okay, cool. So how confident are you with four figure grid reference? We should we start from the beginning and start fresh for figure grid reference, it's easy but like as in like I need to still like I'm confident with it, but I just still need to like, Yeah. Okay. So if I was to ask you what's the four figure grid reference of this information, what would you think? It says 407, three, three, perfect, four, seven and 33. So you've gone, I really like this phrase, along the corridor and up the stairs. So we're always starting to go along the corridor and then we go up the says, sometimes when you get more complicated with six figure grid reference, you can forget that you always start with the four figure. So you're always starting from the left hand side when you're moving along the corridor and then you're all reading from the bottom when you go up the stairs. So Yeah, you're absolutely right. We're reading from the left hand side. So we're in box 47 and we're reading from the bottom of the box when we go up the stairs. So it's 33. Seems like you've got it. Okay. What about if I asked you the four figure grid reference for this one tree? Four, eight, three, two. Perfect. Great. So again, you've gone along the corridor, you've read from the left hand side, and then you've gone up the stairs and you've read from the figure below. Great. Okay. Four figure grid reference, that's all there is to it, right? So now that you've got the four figure grid reference, the six figure grid reference is not that much harder. It just looks harder. So I know how to do the six figure reference. Yeah, okay. So what would you if we're using the same example, what do you think the six figure grid reference for this information box is? Oh, sorry, I haven't moved on. It's also difficult because the lines, it's easier to read which one that I the I Yeah the I Oh the I it's four, seven, four, seven, 63 not an but like four, seven, six, three, three, four perfect. Four, seven, six, three, three, four well done. And what about if I was to ask you, okay, I'm gonna to draw a house, what would the six figure grid reference be for this house? Four, eight, six, three, three, four, four, eight, six, three, three, four. Perfect. I hundred percent agree. Okay, great. So let's do a little practice. I've got a quiz here. Why is he with. Let's see how this goes. Can you see this quiz? Yeah, Yeah, okay, cool. Okay. There's weird music. It's a little bit zoomed out, so I'll just zoom in for you. But what is the four figure? Good reference for the milestone. I think the milestone in this case is marked by ms. It is five, nine, five, seven, three, six. Can you see that? Oh Yeah. Now I can. So it is 49. Oh, it's four figured. Okay, sorry. Four figures. Oh, can not hear me. Oh, okay, I can hear you now. Sorry, I just didn't hear what you said. Oh, I always like. What do you think about this question? I think of this question as 4973. 49. 735973. So you think that answer is b Oh yes, sorry 59. Yay. Well done. Okay, best one. Correct. In which square would you find weight and farm? Is that zoomed in enough for you? Wait and farm a wait town. Wait, town farm. Five, four, seven, one. I thought something nice. Well done. Is easy for you. Okay, what is the six figure? Good reference for the spring to the south. First you have to find the spring to the south. The spring to the sound, can you see it? No, I can't. Actually, it's simple. When the map is spr and it's in blue. I can see it here. It's in the southwest corner of the map. Oh, that thing. Spr. Spr. Okay, so it's. Okay, let me think 57. 25, 11. I agree. Great. Well done. Okay. What is the six beggrid reference for the campsite? Do you know the os symbol for a campsite? So symbofor. Yeah, okay. So seven, seven, seven, six, six, three. Wonderful. I agree. Wow, you're good at this. You just need to be confident that you can do six big grim references, but you really can. Okay. What type of woodland would you find at grid reference 787629? I'm not sure if that's a honey. Oh no, actually, it's a mix of both, right? The mix of both. Great. Whest trees are the pointy ones. They look like Christmas trees. Yay. Five out of five. Well done. That was good. I think you seem confident with six bigger grireferences, but let's do a little bit more. Okay, I've got a worksheet. Okay, let's start by filling in these gaps. Hang on, let me just upload this so I can run on it too. Okay, let's fill in these gaps. Start with the compass directions. So the first one is Yeah like the one below nw is is W nw. Okay, let's start with north and let's work our way clockwise north North East, right? Well done. Next one. Southeast cool. South southwest. And then west. Last one. West northwest. Great. Well done. Okay. We've done this study in study the map and answer these questions. Okay, let's zoom in on this map. Is that assumed it enough for you? Yeah. In which direction do you travel to get from the campsite at Pindale farm to peryville castle? So we need to find the campsite at Pindale farm and paragel castle. So just take your time. In what direction you. Two. Where's penindle fun? Oh that to where to to Parville castle Parwill. Where's Parville castle? Let me check. Is a pc? No, no it's not. It's actually quite difficult to spoi'm going give it to you, but it's here. Wait, there, wait, not dating it here. Mm, where's my pen? Not working here? Here's parabil castle. Can you see that? Oh that okay that is. Northeast, right? Not so. It's how you get from the campsite. So you start at the campsite. Oh, that Oh Yeah, I only read pdle to whatever that was. Okay, up pdle. So it's west. Yes, perfect. It's weyou have to be really careful how you read the question because you could have easily said ease. And that would have been right if the question said from Parville castle to the farm, you see what I mean? So you just have to be they're trying have to trick you with the question sometimes, so you just have to make sure you're reading the question really thoroughly. Okay, let's do the next let me get rid of these. In which direction is Castleton town center from Marston farm? See if you can find those two locations. Where's Marston farhave? A little look for it. I'll give you one more minute of looking and then I can give you a hint. Oh, that again, north. East. Okay, so pawithin ton town from Auston. Okay. So this is Castleton town. Let's see there. And this is Marston farm. In which direction is Castleton town centre from? So we're starting at Marston farm. So we're measuring it's not updating on here, but it's the same way of tricking you was starting at Marston farm and we're measuring two Caleton. So it wouldn't just be did you say east. What was your answer as the southeast? I mean, I mean, northeast. Yeah. So it's not northeast, but it's southeast. Oh, pikers is from it's okay, it's from exactly. That's why I'm saying you have to be really careful about reading the question. Okay, I'm gonna make one more up just so we can make sure that you 100% get this. Okay, let's have a look. In which direction? In which direction? Is goose hill? From Mitchell bank. Mitchell bank. Where' S Mitchell bank? Let me check Mitchell bank. I cannot see it anywhere. Oh, there. Okay. And we think. Mitchell bank goose hill from Mitchell bank south. Oh goose hill. Yeah south. No, careful. Sorry. Okay. I used to see that again. From where to where? What direction is goose hill from mecho bank? Okay, so northwest. Nice brother. Cool. Actually, no, I want to keep that. Sorry, it's not updating in time yet. There we go. Sorry, there's a bit of a lag between winit when I'm writing it in and it's actually updating. Okay. I feel like you've got this, but I just want to do a little bit more practice just to be 100% sure. So. What is the four figure grid reference of the village of wind Chelsea? I can't really see Oh, that is 9017. 1917 great. Well done. 1917. What about the toilet near the beach? Yeah, I can see them. Okay, 91 1521Dean. What is the six figure grid reference of the telephone box in wind Chelsea? Let's see you at telephone boxes. Yeah, okay, let me zoom in a little bit more so it's easier for you what the okay, it is 19 90. Night sorry, nine zero 67I only 17. Three or four, I would probably say four. Don't you agree? Sorry, high up the B3Yeah. Okay, great. And what about the six figure grid reference for rye Marsh Farm? If you can find rye Marsh Farm. Oh, it's six figured. Nine, one, two, eight, one, eight. Three or 444. Probably. Amazing. And we've got one more, the windmill. I need to find the windmill as well. I can't find the winvell. Hang on. Probably gonna be somewhere where there's not anything nearby. So like the beach, I would be nearest to the beach, but it wouldn't be on the beach. Okay, maybe not. Where is the windmill on here? There's no os signs for it. Okay, anyway, we can move on. I'll try find it later, okay. Let's move on to. I want to. You just get out this. So I think you've got the six figure and the four figure grid references down really well. How do you feel about them? You're okay. Do you feel like more practice would make you more confident in it? Maybe okay. Okay, we can get some we can do some more practice of it. I also wanted to show you different like what other features an os map has to offer. So a really important thing an os map has to offer is scale. It's kind of difficult for me to teach you how to properly use the scale, but what you do is on the os map in the bottom right hand corner, normally you'll have something that looks like this. Does this look familiar to you? The scale? Yeah. Yeah. So you put your ruler against this and you can measure that. For example, 1 cm on your ruler would be equivalent to 25 km on this map, for instance. Yeah. Yeah, you've learned that. Yeah, you know that. Okay. Cool. So that's another really useful aspect of an os map is the fact that we can scale it. And it's not necessarily completely accurate. Like it might be that we measure something that's 25 km, and it's actually 24 once you've factor in hills and streets and all of that kind of stuff. So it's not claiming to be 100% accurate, but it's a really good way of using scale. So that's something to look out for. Do you know what spot height a mark does on an os map? Let me see if I can find. I think there are circles, right? And then there's some numbers on up beside it. Exactly. So the spot height is marked with a circle and a number. And then a triangulation pillar is a triangle with a number. So spot heights are used to show the highest point in an area, for example, mountain summit. And a triangulation pillar is a concrete pillar that Marks the highest part of the land. So they're often used interchangeably, but they help us to understand the relief of the land. Are you familiar with the term relief? Yeah, cool. How would you define relief? What would you say? Relief is the amazing think it's. Have you like when we learned mountains, it said something like. Hill relief or something similar. But then someone told me that it was like the. I'm not sure. No, you've got it. I think it sounds like, you know, relief is essentially a word to describe the height of the land. So how mountainous or flat it is. Yeah. So Yeah, you're absolutely right. You hit the name on the head. Well done. It's a good word to use when you're describing physical geography. It's really important and I'm sure you're gonna to hear it a lot as you continue to study the subject. So it's a good one to know. Okay, what can you tell me about contour lines? What do you know about contour lines on tour lines? Are you familiar with them? Oh Yeah, they show like they show like the what's the quite what's the Oh Yeah, they show like the. They show how high off it is, like the steepness of anlike mountains, 100%. Corlines also show relief. They're showing us how mountainous or flat a land is. And if the lines, the contour lines, are really close together, does that mean that the area is steep or flat? I'm very close together. There. Wait, that arms are steep. Yeah, nice. Close together is stefar part is gentle. So Yeah you can see in this map in the corner the parts, you can kind of see how the mountains are being outlined here when the contour lines are really close together. This is the steepest part of the mountain where as as we move further down, you can see the contour lines are further apart. So it's indicating that the mountain is getting or the hill is getting latter, more gentle smoping. So those are also another really important tool that an os map has to offer. So I feel like we've you can kind of start to see what differs an os map from an ordinary map like we saw at the start of the lesson. And it's because it can tell us so much about an area that we're studying and that we're walking through or living in. So that should be useful. Okay. When you're asked in I know you're not doing exams in a test or your teacher's asking you to describe direction somewhere or to describe to get from point a in a map to point b, things that you have to include or you should be thinking about are the grid references. So either the four figure or the six figure, which I think you're confident in recognizing the symbols you're gonna to have a look in a at popular symbols that you see on basically all os, maps, directions. So using your compass star and being able to describe the relief of the land. So whether that's deep or gently sloping flat, and that's using the contour lines. So for example, when you're describing a mat, it would sound something like this. So starting at the car park at six, seven, eight, 30, five, nine, walk on a public footpath shown by symbol and then youdraw the symbol, or put in the symbol, if you're using a computer, up a gentle slope in a southeast easterly direction for 400m. Once you reach the youth centre, take the minor road westwards for 1 km to the castle. So in this very brief description, you can understand that you know how to identify six figures, you know what the different symbols on the os map are. You can confidently talk about compass directions from one point to another, and you've also used 400 meof one kilometers. So it indicates that you know how to use the scale. So you wanna make sure that you're showing off all of your skills when you're writing up descriptions of map readings. Do you feel confident in all of those things? Is there something that you want me to go through again? Not really. Okay right. So let's see. What do I want to show you next? I wanted to show you the popular symbols. Yeah so this is like a generic os map key that you would see one of these features on any os map. In the uk particularly, we have a lot of churches. So you would normally see a place of worship with tower or wood spire. In most of these places you've got schools spring, which we saw. So I think the more os maps you've familiarize yourself with, the easier this will get because it be like, Oh Yeah, fb, I know that's a footbridge because I answered a question on that last week and it won't change depending on the os map. They always stay the same. So it might be useful for you to have a look over this key. Okay, let's finish with. I can do that. Next lesson, let's finish with a couple more six figures. And then next I've set you some. Okay, we'll do one more six figure. Okay, so for this map, find the six figure grid reference four. What they. You Studland uninesee Studland Studland hotel land. Can you see the hotel in Studland? Yeah, okay, can I have the six figure grid reference please? The hotel. Oh, never mind, I can't see any hotels in stuland. It's kind of it's there. What? Oh, there. Okay, so that is the six figure grid is zero three. I can't find the hotel anymore. Heck. Oh Yeah, right. Zero 39. Eight, two, six or seven, I would say seven. Great. Well done. Okay. So we're going to continue practicing that next lesson and we're going to do some math descriptions. I set you some homework. Do you have it is okay if you don't have time to do this homework, but have you seen a climate graph before? Have you seen this type of graph? Yeah. Okay. So what this homework is, it's just answering some basic questions based on the graph, and they're pretty mathematical. So it's just calculating total precipitation, precipitation range, mean temperature, median temperature, mode temperature, and a quick description of the pattern of precipitation and making sure you refer to figures. Whthere, our next lesson, I think our next lesson, let me have a look. It's on. It's next Saturday, so you've got time, okay? And if it needs to be done for next Sunday, that's also fine by me. I don't want to interfere with your school homework, but it shouldn't take you too long. Yeah. And Yeah, if you wanna send it to me before Saturday, I'll mark it for you and then we can discuss it in the lesson. Okay, okay, great. Any questions? Anything you want to discuss next and in particular, you can keep going with I'm not actually sure. I don't think so. Okay, cool. I will make a plan for amazing. Good luck with the rest of your week. I hope it goes well. And Yeah, let me know if you have any questions. Hey, thank you.
